  Beware of the arbitrary corkage charge!

  Our group of 8 checked in, having booked the 1-night-2-meals package. The rooms were of a good size. But the furniture was terribly worn. The cushion seats were frayed and out of shape. The patina on the wooden arm of the chairs had worn out to reveal the wooden material under. But the worst experience was with dinner. As we have been travelling for three days and we had some wine left in a bottle, we thought we could finish it over dinner. (Our mistake, of course, for not having asked first about corkage.) When we had almost finished, the local driver/guide came in and said the man at the front desk, who looked like the supervisor, was furious because we had brought our own bottle. But up until then there was no direct dialogue between us and the hotel management. Nor did anybody come in to inform us that if we consumed our own wine on the spot, there would be a corkage charge. There was no prewarning of any kind. The next day, on checking out, this same man presented a billl for 6,890 yen, for the pot of Japanese tea (which came without our asking) and for the bottle we brought (about 1/4 full). After some exchange, he agreed to take out the charge for the tea, which was 1200 yen. When asked how he charged 5690 yen as CORKAGE, NOT THE WINE, he said because he regarded our wine as EQUIVALENT TO the top class sake. I asked him to show me the official corkage charge list, while telling him the bottle was still in the garbage bin in my room to prove it was definitely not 'top class sake'. He conciliated, and charged the 'mid-range', which was about 1000 yen less. I still did not find it reasonable. So the haggling went on, and in the end, I had to pay 2600+ yen. It's the first ever experience in my numerous trips to Japan to have corkage equivalent to a bottle of 'top class wine'. So if you plan to stay in this hotel, beware of a rip off like this! And of course, the attitude of the front desk man left much to be desired.

  Amazingly Memorable!

  This was a surprise visit, this place is a gem in this part of Japan, supposedly the clearest sky for star gazing. Like a traditional onsen the plan starts with welcome drink and elaborate explanation by the hostess in the room about the facilities. Rooms are Japanese family rooms with Tatami flooring and futon as bedding. The hot water spring is natural with sulphur smell makes the skin glow. The elaborate dinner follows with multiple courses. Next morning breakfast is again traditional Japanese each item is arranged artistically. The location, the ambiance and food.. perfect.
