Great for bathing and trying exclusive foodLocation of the hotel overlooking the town is great. very quiet at night. The staff is amazingly friendly, well trained and speak English. The food is a masterpiece for your eyes but some dishes are quite experimental for the Western European taste (snales, sea cucumber, soups etc.) but you get a very good impression of highly sophisticated Japanese food. There is a shuttle bus to the city and train station which is very convenient. The Onsen itself inside the hotel is great....very relaxing with nice outside area.

Beautiful, traditional and excellent servicesI enjoyed every second of my stay here. It was one of the best and most relaxing hotel experience I had, and note that I have stayed in my different hotels in all price range. Dinner and breakfast were excellent. Staff were friendly with great service. Although their English was not fluent, they tried hard and it was sufficient to communicate. My room had a small outdoor onsen, but I still used the public outdoor onsen and it was amazing. I went early in the morning and had the whole onsen to myself. The view and soaking in hot onsen outdoor was speechless experience. Everyone should try the public outdoor onsen.

Very cool ryokanMy husband and I had a wonderful stay. Staff was easy to communicate with and understanding of our needing to cancel one night due to the typhoon. Our room was comfortable and had a lovely private outdoor onsen. Dinner was very tasty and we enjoyed the various Japanese offerings and the explanations. The grilled sushi speciality was very very good. Breakfast was superb as well and wonderfully organized. The salmon in miso was the best breakfast fish we had our entire trip. The shuttle bus was easy to find and convenient. Overall would recommend for travelers looking for a traditional experience that is relatively easy to access off of main train routes (we arrived from Osaka and departed for Tokyo).

Authentic Japanese hot springs expience!Yunoshimakan is a sight to be seen and experienced firsthand! The resort-style ryokan offers vintage charm with history and beautiful scenery all around. I visited here while on vacation in Japan for my first time, in between time in Tokyo and Kyoto and combined on a leg to Takayama. The shuttle from the train station to the hotel made arrival super easy. The dinner and breakfast were delicious, both the in-room and public hot springs very relaxing and clean, and the overall facility was interesting to explore. Also, don't miss Bar Moonlight - felt like I traveled back in time and the bartenders were incredibly friendly! And don't miss the gift shop with many well priced souveniers to take back home. The friendly service was consistent throughout the stay, as well. Definitely worth the train ride to Gero!

Disappointing Commercialized RyokanThe location and the look of the exterior of Yunoshimakan got my attention but I should have read more reviews to prevent me from booking this wrong one. Having skied 5 days straight in Hakuba our family wanted some pampering with onsen and traditional Japanese cuisine. Our first ryokan stay was in Takayama, an intimate family-run ryokan called Katsuragi no Sato. We had an open bath overlooking snowy garden and the meals and service there were simply fantastic. It was one of the best experience we have had after having many ryokan stays throughout the years. Now at Yunoshimakan came huge disappointment. We have booked a room with an indoor private onsen, but the onsen seems very outdated and run down. Service was none as staff seem to have too much to handle. Food was below average for the price we paid. It seemed like most food was pre-made and waited to be serve in your room. If commercialized ryokan is your cup of tea you can give Yunoshimakan a go. There seems to be quite a number of facilities such as tennis table and club for drinking, but if you are looking for intimate, authentic Japanese ryokan onsen stay then dont book this one!
