Incredible ryokanIf you're looking for a unique ryokan experience in the Tokyo area, look no further. Incredible food and atmosphere, and the place is full of unique art pieces. I've been to many ryokan around Japan, and this is one of the best.

Exceeded our expectations, very much recommendedWe were 2 parents, 1 teenager, stayed in a room with a sleeping area, main area and a small but nice extra space with fridge, massage chair and 2 other chairs and small table. We had a private bath which we didn't use but which seemed fine. We had 2 traditional dinners and 2 traditional breakfasts. The staff were hospitable and helpful in all interactions we had. The person who hosted us through meals (bringing food, explaining it to a degree, trying to help with questions) was very warm and made us feel at home and well looked after. The food was excellent, the place has an onsen (hot baths) which was clean and well organised. The facility is quiet and they have managed to create a really relaxing atmosphere. The location was great. We wanted to go further into the hills and see Mt Fuji and the bus stop for that was just a couple of minutes walk. We could walk to the train station, 20 minutes or so, fine when day-tripping. The room itself had a bit of a view too. Something to bear in mind for visitors to Japan is that a traditional style room involves using rolled out futons and quite firm pillows, and that a traditional breakfast is very much a seafood oriented meal. One point regarding WiFi (as it seems topical for reviews) is that because we had our own portable wifi point, quite common to have as a traveller in Japan, I'm not sure if the hotel had it. We had one small misunderstanding regarding the number in our group, and it was resolved without any fuss or hassle.

Wonderful Japanese Royken (Inn) with Thermal Spa and Great RestaurantWe recently visited the museum of art (MOA) in Atami an hour bullet train ride from Tokyo. About a 10 minute taxi ride from Atami is the beautiful town of Yugawara which is known for its thermal spas. We discovered a Japanese Royken (Inn) called Mimasuya which was fantastic. The Royken was situated on a hill with views of the Sagami Bay. It has a garden and nice paintings and art pieces inside. They offer both western style beds as well as traditional Japanese floor mats. The rooms were large and well appointed with a large spa tub. Alternately they have separate men and woman hot spas complete with showers and scrubbing areas. They were wonderful on a cold winter evening. The service was fantastic. We were met with tea and a snack by very attentive staff. While all didn't speak English, they all used software to translate English-Japanese. We had no communication problems. The highlight was the food. Dinner was a 2 hour affair with about 15 small courses including a sake tasting. Breakfast was no less spectacular with multiple courses as well. Finally departure included a coffee with some Japanese pastries. What a fantastic experience. Mimasuya has a web site mimasuya-yugawara.jp.
