Wonderful hospitalityThis trip was meant to be a much-needed respite from the city and I was pleasantly surprised that Masuya provided the perfect experience for the getaway. As we were English-speaking, we needed help to make some local calls and this service was provided with much grace and generosity. The hosts also went out of their way to ensure that all our needs were taken care of. The room was spacious enough for two guests and we especially appreciated the clean and laundered yukata set aside for us every day. Food was, delicious. However, if you are not a big fan of fish, I wouldn't recommend taking the meal options. Location-wise, the ryokan is about 15 mins away from the nearest Lawson by foot. I recommend buying some snacks before you make your way to the accommodation if you don't plan on leaving and tend to get peckish. All in all, it was a wonderful stay.

Expensive ryokan with wonderful staff and very good foodThis is a difficult place to review as my option is subjective and may not be helpful to you. First off, the staff at this place is wonderful in the Japanese tradition. The kaiseki dinner was great. The Western breakfast was short on food, the coffee long delayed and luke warm. Wish they served more fruit and yogurt. We went up the street to get more coffee every day. We are in our mid 60's and sleeping on the floor on a hard futon with out any furniture in the room for luggage was just too painful. So much for experiencing a Zen moment. We up graded to a bigger room with raised futons and a private onsen. It was much better but $250 a night more expensive. But my back rejoiced. The public onsen was very nice. The place is pretty clean except there were cobwebs on the wall of the bath in our first room. The carpets in the halls are very spotted and could use a good cleaning if not replacement. From my personal perspective, I am done with ryokans. I am too old to sleep on the floor. I cannot sit cross legged on the floor without pain. So I would not go back here or any other ryokan again. If it's your thing, this place is great. Again the staff is wonderful. A general note - Frankly the town is a big down trodden and shabby. There are abandoned buildings on the back street outside this hotel. There really is not much to do here. As for the monkeys, if you love monkeys in the wild you will love them. As for me, I've been there and done that. Saw a lot of skiers so that might be worth coming here for that. But this is the one place I would scratch would have omitted on our 3 week visit to Japan. Otherwise, just love this country. Hope this helps. Oh, this was about the same price as the Palace Hotel in Tokyo. $500-600 a night.

First ryokan experience! We heard so much about ryokans so we wanted to try it. We werent disappointed. The ryokan was 12 minute walk from Yudanaka station. When we arrived by train there was a driver with the sign for the ryokan. Easy peasy. We had to leave our shoes every time we enter the ryokan. Place was very clean and quite. Our room had a outdoor bath which was so amazing. Its very cold and you can see snow but the bath is wonderfully hot! The room was very nice but dont expect a soft bed. We didnt sleep on futons but it was still quite a hard bed. Shibu Onsen is a 2 minute walk. Didnt use the onsen as our outside bath was good enough. The meals were amazing! So tasty and beautifully presented. Staff were very helpful and managed to communicate okay with limited English. As much as we loved our 3 day stay, would go for the kaiseki dinner no more than twice. Its was very rich and filling so 3 nights was a bit too much! But no complaints about ryokan.

Totally not worth the moneyWe stayed here to visit the Snow monkeys. The price included breakfast and dinner which were good traditional Japanese and very enjoyable. We have had better food however at cost of maybe 7000 yen for 2 together. The staff is incredibly courteous and the private Onsen (at 2200 yen extra fee) is the best Onsen experience we've had in Japan. The problem however sits in the facts that this hotel is >2x the price of any other we've stayed in Japan. That while the beds were the worst we stayed in (we've also slept on the ground at the monks in Koya-San which was more comfortable), the shower was completely unusable (no temperature or water direction/ flow control, no water pressure) and to top it off the toilet smelled like bad sewage which at times extended into the rooms. All in all a very mixed experience combining the best and worst we've had in Japan. For this price it is not at all what we expected. Very unfortunate but true. If you want to see the Snow Monkeys, I would recommend staying in Nagano and making it a day trip instead. You'll have a better hotel at half the price and Nagano is actually quite a nice city, well worth spending a night.

Mid-sized well kept OnsenMasuya is located along the Main Street with a back door that leads directly to the Shibu Onsen street. The ryokan is well-kept and very clean with 2 large Onsens with both outdoor and indoor baths available. The amenities provided were Pola brand. The staff were friendly and polite though they didnt seem to speak much English. One hiccup though was in spite of communicating the exact time of arrival at the train station and receiving a confirmation; the hotel had to be given a call by the staff at the local train station to come by to pick us.
