Japanese hospitality and under 5 min walk to the ski lifts

Yoshidaya ryokan is a traditional style, Japanese accomodation in Zao Onsen. We stayed as a group of 5 friends in two rooms, one sleeping 3 and 2 in the other. The main aspect of our stay was the service. From the moment we walked in the front door until we were given parting gifts after our six nights, nothing was too much! Chigsa is a skilled host who's English is exceptional and was enthusiastic to help us with simple tasks like deciding where to go for dinner to more complex things like which train would be best to take for the next leg of our journey. Breakfast is available at a very reasonable to cheap rate. Traditional Japanese is fantastic, even the most inexperienced palate amongst us found something to enjoy. The room rate seems cheap and it is! This accommodation is in a perfect location, close to great restaurants, convenience store and situated between two major lifts for easy access to the whole mountain. The service and friendliness at Yoshidaya Ryoken is second to none. You can also purchase discounted ski lift tickets at reception. The bedding was traditional style, thin matresses on the floor. We all slept well on these beds however, some found it more comfortable than others. If you're a fussy sleeper, consider bringing your own pillow. Each room had its own toilet and there is a communal shower which I never had to wait for as most people use the hotels onsen. The onsen is a highlight in itself, healed many sore muscles after a long day on the slopes. All in all Yoshidaya Ryoken was terrific! Exceptional value, beautiful, courteous staff with lots of local knowledge, they were happy to share and Japanese hospitality which seems to run so deep in their nature it comes so naturally to them. I highly recommend this traditional style Japanese accommodation to any traveler.

Home from home, excellent ryokan in Zao

This is a really excellent place to stay in traditional Japanese style. The staff are very friendly and kind, especially Chigusa (the manager). Breakfast is excellent - either Japanese or Western style. Unfortunately, I fell and broke my arm while walking in the snow. Chigusa (the manager) arranged for my treatment including taxis to the hospital and back to the hotel. My fracture was reduced and placed in a cast within 90 minutes. Next morning, I was at the bus station waiting for the bus to Yamagata. One of the ryokan staff arrived to return my Ipad charger, which I forgot. I cannot write highly enough about Yoshidaya Ryokan.

Comfortable and convenient ryokan, English speaking host

This is a very comfortable, accessible and friendly ryokan. Walking distance to bus station, gondola, public onsens, and restaurants. Our room was very large, Japanese style. Indoor Onsen very convenient if you don't want to venture out in the cold to the nearby public Onsen. Breakfast both Western and Japanese just fine. Will come again.

Great place to stay for skiing

We stayed here for snow trip and found it to be a great little Ryokan. The staff were friendly and very helpful about local knowledge. Short walk to the slopes and shops. Rooms are cozy. The onsen downstairs is VERY hot but that's the same for all onsens in the area. Very rustic traditional old style rooms. Heating included. Good value for money.

Couldn't ask for more for the price

We stayed for 7 nights at Yoshidaya fantastic value for money. All staff were very polite & helpful. The room was spacious & lovely and warm. We enjoyed the inhouse Onsen if we didn't venture out to nearby public ones- great way to relax after a day on the slopes. All the meals we had were delicious. Great recommendations for other places to eat were also given.
