Nice hotel but in an isolated islandThis is a very nice hotel used for APEC meeting. The hotel is very much relying on its prominence status, and shows off pictures of global leaders. It is located in an isolated gated island (part of its privileged status), which makes it very hard to go in and out. But there is nothing to do inside of this hotel or on the island for families. Taxi drivers don't want to have to come onto the island and we had to pay an extra bonus on top of their fees. I would not recommend for family stay. The other Kempinski hotel nearby is much better located, close to the lake park.

Symbiosis of tradition and contemporary design: perfect stay for sightseeing and relaxingOur stay at Yanqi Lake Hotel was definitively one of the most amazing ones! The hotel has been built for the APEC summit and the president himself stayed there. All the materials used and the craftsmanship employed is at its best. The rooms are spacious and well designed. The staff as well as the general manager himself were very helpful and kind. They gave us some wonderful advices for sightseeing. You should absolutely try the restaurant where you can enjoy delicious chinese specialities. This hotel is perfectly located for going to see the Great Wall Mutianyu as well as the Hongluo temple. It takes you only 20 minutes by car. It was a beautiful discovery as I was looking for a modern but traditional hotel in a calm area in order to go to see the Great Wall.

Disappointing experienceDespite the beauty of the resort and excellent location service was very poor. English is barely spoken, not even simple words like water or gym were understood. We found a note in the room indicating that dinner was only provided through room service, which menus was very limited, no dish of meat or fish available, just basic items like burgers, sandwiches, noodles, fried rice and salad. We ate dinner on a tray in our room every night. Restaurants were closed for dinner and so it was the great outdoors cafe and the wine bar. Paulaner beer, a classic in Kempinski, was in the menu but not available. No one warned us about the room dining only option, which is unprofessional. The website only referred to adjustments to the menu without specifying that the only option available is limited room service. As the hotel is isolated and there are no other options the hotel management must be more specific when accepting reservations. It is disappoint to spend 3 nights in an upmarket hotel under this food regime. The resort was full so it is hard to understand why only room service is available. We paid a premium for a better view from a balcony but were confined indoors by endless hours of incredibly noisy law mowing for a full afternoon and the following morning.

This Hotel SucksThis 5-star hotel would generously be considered a 3 star hotel anywhere in the west. Featuring exposed bathrooms visible for miles around the hotel, the Yanqi Kempinski is the perfect place for those wishing to fulfill their dreams of flashing a multitude of Chinese families. The rooms, which look nothing like the pictures on their website (or any other website they are featured on), have spectacular views of the worlds ugliest buildings, not exactly the mountains or lakes they promise. If it happens to be your anniversary, the hotel will help you celebrate by scattering ten plastic rose petals on your bed, and making sure to ring you at 9:30PM on your anniversary night to tell you that they mis-charged you, and your deposit is incorrect because they dont know how to do math. There is a lot of beautiful scenery in the area, unfortunately, you cant see any of it from the hotel. Dont stay here, this hotel sucks and their staff are incompetent and rude.

Overpriced and bleak. When we arrived at the lake we were stopped at the gate and were interrogated by the guards who treated us like we came from outer space. They wanted to see our passports, hotel reservation, and seemed bemused to why we were here; so not such a good first impression. The hotel or island has no on-site convenience store which is bizarre for a hotel so remote. We were told to take a taxi 25 minutes away to the nearest store which we did, but that seemed unnecessary as we drove past many convenience stores within the first 10 minutes. We paid 1600rmb per night and this hotel is not worth that amount of money in my opinion. The kempinksi website falsely advertises this room saying it has a mountain or lake view, you can see some of the lake and the rusty boat from the balcony, but mostly a concrete courtyard and straight into everyone elses bathroom. The beds are comfortable and the bathroom is modern and spacious. We went to visit the bar at 7pm for a drink before dinner but it closes at 6pm, which is incredibly early, so it's a good job we purchased some wine from the supermarket. The swimming pool and gym are nice and quiet, with the steam room and sauna both on. For dinner we ate at the Western restaurant. I had the saddest looking fish and chips I had ever seen, just two pieces of fish and chips with no lemon, salad or the two types of potato as described on the menu...I felt ripped off for 188rmb. My friend had a burger, which was ok. Breakfast was a much better experience; a mini breakfast buffet with a range of different options. The staff in the hotel were friendly and they spoke some English, they helped us order a taxi home as there were none available on the Didi app due to the hotels remoteness. I felt quite isolated at this hotel, and it had a dull, bleak feeling in my opinion I have stayed at kempinski hotels before and had a fabulous experience, so I felt let down this time. its a tough time for hospitality at the moment and things might not be running as smoothly as normal. But I feel the hotel prices should represent the level of services and quality you will receive.
