    Ohana and Hakushu Festival

At first I was disappointed as the hotel was merely an ordinary-looking concrete building, located next to historical buildings belonged to feudal lords who ruled the region. But after all, my stay was wonderful. I stayed at the hotel Ohana with my family on the first day of the Hakushu festival, an anniversary memorial service for Hakushu Kitahara (1885-1942), a famous poet born and brought up in Yanagawa. The festival is held every year from 1 to 3 November. At night, canal boats beautifully decorated with lanterns are parading on the also beautifully decorated canal while traditional music, Japanese drums or other are played on the bank. We hadn't booked the boat ride in advance so we couldn't get our seats on the night boat, but just strolling around to see the parade was enjoyable enough. At the time the parade ends, there were fireworks very close to the hotel premises. Our room was facing east that allowed only a partial view, but the hotel staff recommended the terrace of the restaurant block and provided chairs and hot drink for us so that we could watch it comfortably there.(I payed for the coffee, but the tea was free.) If we come next time, I will definitely book a room facing south. They gave us a free ticket for a small museum in the premises, which was worth looking.

Cosy hotel in a charming canal filled village

Yanagawa is small and its people are friendly. There are three bars in town, one is over the road from the hotel. The generosity and helpfulness of the people can be found in an outside the hotel. The rooms are traditional Japanese and they have fresh flowers in the room. We got free entry into the local museum and onsen. The food in the dbb package was good. But the hotel is tired. The staff make you quickly forget that.

old building with a nice view

it is not that close the station. you could either take a bus or take a boat. we were carrying luggage thus didnt want to take the boat though it could be nice as the boat stopped right in front of the hotel. in the winter, we may do that. sept is still hot and sunny. i felt we could melt on the way. bus was scarce. every 30 minutes from station to hotel and every hour from hotel to stattion. we missed the one on our way back. took 1000 yen taxi instead. the hotel is dated. the only compensation is the balcony facing the beautiful japanese garden. lots of pine trees and a large pond. breakfast was pretty nice. we didn't hade dinner at hotel. went to a restaurant nearby that is famouse for its steamed eel rice. we paid 22000 yen for breakfast + room. a little expensive

    Grilled eel

We had a pleasant meal of grilled eel here. The service was fine and the food was ok. There are many eel restaurants in Yanagawa and this one was a bit more economical and appears to cater to large groups. Not bad for a quick lunch.
