    Great location

The location is ideal. Wifi doesn't reach all rooms. Common bathrooms and toilets. No english spoken. It comes cheap, and you get for your money. Locations is clearly a plus. The rest is at minimum service.

    Excellent Value and Cleanliness

I needed an accommodation that is close to airport for an early flight home, and Yamamoto Ryokan is merely 2 mins walk to Gion underground station, which is just 3 stops away from the airport, and just one stop from Hakata Station. This family owned ryokan is located within short walking distance to Kushida Shrine as well as Kawabuta Shopping Alley, around where you can find yatai eateries for your supper. Despite that, the only noise expected was probably from the owners' dog, six of them now :P Though I must confess I didn't hear a single bark during my 1 night stay. Yamamoto Ryokan is slightly different from my expectation of a traditional Japanese Ryokan, seriously, for that price, don't expect the luxury of being served meals in rooms and get your beddings laid for you. Meals are serve in the dining hall just behind the service counter. Toilets and bath room are shared, at night the bathroom can be a frustrating wait when some patrons locked themselves inside and took long bath, you have to wait even if you just want a shower, cos it's inside the bathroom, and there are only two. Dinner and breakfast are included in my accommodation and taste absolutely delicious! There were sashimi, radish, vegetable tempura, soup, natto, etc, I initially wanted to go Yatai for supper, but had to scrap the plan because I was too full after dinner. The entire ryokan was seamlessly maintained despite its age, and there are even washing machine if you need to do laundry. Rooms are laid with tatami flooring, and come with satellite TV, the entire Ryokan are WiFi connected (in fact there are so many connection to select, all password free). Those rare patrons who do not possess a smart device can make use of their public PC at the 'reception'. The owners do not speak English, but try communicating with them via Google Translate apps if needs to. Tried that, works well! They didn't appear friendly initially, but were quite warm after I managed to communicate with them with the help of Google Translate apps. As for my rating, it will be 5 stars if I didn't have to wait so long for my turn at the bath room. No curfew. The only 'curfew' was the bathroom, shut for cleaning between 12am and 6am. My only regret was, I only stay one night. Will definitely come back if I re-visit Hakata. Yamamoto Ryokan was the discovery of my entire trip throughout Kyushu!

Good experience and value of money

It's a Japanese style Ryokan, it's worth to stay to experience. I booked with half board The breakfast and dinner are OK, but be prepared to experience something different. The location is very good and very close to Gion subway station, and you arrive directly from airport by subway. It's at very central place and quite easy to go either by walk or metro. The owner speak very limited English, it's kind of difficult to communicate. There is not good smell in the tiny shared toilet. Overall it's good and you get what you pay.

Second time back and loved it again!

I've been to Yamamoto Ryoka twice in the past few years and both times I've had an absolutely lovely stay. The owners, an elderly couple, are very sweet. The rooms are definitely not huge but comfily sized and I slept so well on the floor futon and tatami matting. My room for 3 people even had its own mini-balcony, TV, and sink! The huge family baths are great for a group soak after a long day of touristing, and the location is very convenient and close to great sights such as the Kushida Jinja (home of the Gion Matsuri), Canal City (a lovely huge mall), and tons of nightlife. The Gion subway station is only a stone's throw away, and you can easily walk to the more central Hakata station as well. All in all, Yamamoto Ryokan was well-loved by all members of my traveling party. We also loved the owners' dog, Chami. :) Thanks for a great stay!

Still feeling the warm hospitality after all these years!

This is my 2nd visit since 2015, and the ryokan still impressed me after all these years. Most of the points I raised in my previous post still valid, so I'll just supplement it from there. This time round, I had an even earlier flight, so I didn't go with their meal option, but even though you book a room without meal, I guess you can request for a breakfast for 525 Yen upon arrival, which I feel is worthwhile. In my opinion, the ryokan location is superb than even Hakata station, at least I don't have to squeeze past the crowd to get to the subway platform. It's just 2 mins walk from Gion subway exit 2 (no lift nor escalator) anyway, and is within short walk from Kushida Shrine and Nakasu-Kawabata Shopping Alley, there are also many eateries across the main street which opens as early as 5am and close after midnight. There is also a convenient store a stone throw away. I actually only met the host once upon checking-in, literally speaking, it's less of a minshuku and really more like a hotel, privacy well preserved. But most of the time, the only 'receptionist' is the owners' dog. LOL! Don't worry, it doesn't bark nor bite. I was allocated a room on level 2, with toilet and washing point just outside, but I needed to proceed downstair for bath. This time round, there are no queue for bath room, and I thought I heard the host went in after I left to clean up the bath room, just so the next one using can have a good bathing experience, even though I consider myself having very good bathing ethics, showering before dipping inside the bath tub. The water in the large bath tub is hot, but user can turn on the running tap to cool it down before bathing. Shampoo, soap, and towel are all provided inside the bathroom. Toothbrushes, if required, can self-obtained from the lobby, along with the many discount coupons and travel brochures. There is also 1 coin laundry available. If anything, take note that lightings are sensor controlled, so do not be alarmed when you brush you teeth half way and then the lights dim off, just shake your body a little bit, and it will be back on. Just like my previous stay, I would love to stay here again if I return to Hakata.
