I sincerely believe it could be much better....My expectations were high, and thats the truth. The web site descriptions gave to me an image of a place in the countryside that would more than satisfy and please. I hasten at this point to add, that these are strange times and the COVID situation has presented us all with Many complex challenges. That said, we are all finding it difficult to do what we are used to doing, and we must adjust our expectations and be a little bit more understanding, I believe that I am very understanding and thoughtful right now to any short falls that may arise due directly or indirectly due to covids impact on normality. This short break was to celebrate our anniversary, a much well earned break, and we were so looking forward to the hospitality promised from the web pages of Willington Hall. We arrived at Willington Hall, the exterior looked pleasing. The greeting, perhaps could have been more welcoming, sincere and enthusiastic. The atmosphere and general feeling was one of something missing, no energy or joy. The room was almost like the web images, and it was of good size, it was a suite, and for the price, I have To say, I have been in much better rooms with much more To add to the overall promise of comfort. Lacking in accessories, little things like a fridge, a trouser press, slippers, bathrobe, bath Matt, shaving mirror, and bathroom must haves, like shampoo conditioner body cream ect, a couple of warm bottles of water were left on a set of draws, in the sun! There were two little sleeves of Coffee, and two biscuits, no hot chocolate. But the bed was clean and comfortable, a big four poster, the views were splendid, the sun cascaded through every window, there was much peace and tranquility, the countryside made you feel really relaxed, the house keeping clearly is good, in terms of cleanliness. To be fair the room furnishings are typical for the style of the hotel, sure there was room for upgrading, but the ambience the views and the peace, compensated for the little things that could have been refreshed. The room was at the rear of the building, room 1, and access was easy, up one flight of creaky wooden stairs, the carpets were nice and added a nice feeling to the approach to the room. The carpet in the room too was lovely. A good nights sleep was had and the fresh air was so nice, no sound of cars or people anywhere. We went down to sit on the terrace, a lovely aspect, and very nice substantial seating, was spoiled for lack of cushions, so had they been in place, linger longer comes to mind. The wine arrive, in a warm steel sleeve with little ice to ensure the bottle and its contents would be served cold. Delivery was not with a smile, more functional than sincere. We we were hoping to have lunch, but the first part of the service convinced us that maybe we should try elsewhere. Which we did. We returned having made a table reservation for 8 pm, I chose the table I would like to dine at, and the table awaited, we arrived, we were informed that the table was ready. The greeting again lacked warmth, friendliness, energy. We made our choice of dishes from a menu that was nothing like the one in the web site, again, one must make allowances, but we could at least have been informed of the changes so that we could have had the chance to decide as to whether we ate there or not. The first course arrived, for a hotel of this standard and price, the starter was very poor in content and presentation. The main course arrived, Sirloin steak, and I have to be honest, it was not at all what I had expected, I asked for it to be cooked with garlic, medium rare and twice or three times cooked chips, what arrived was nothing like it, the steak was tough, chewy and bland, the chips soggy. My wifes steak was chewy, she could eat it, the portobello mushroom was a sad version of one, the vine tomatoes were cold. The wine, not as originally asked for was, ok. All in all, I have to say, the service was not good at all. Then we retired to the bar, at least in there there was a smile, the Irish bar manager made the evening end with much laughter and a genuine desire to serve and look after us. I said to him that the meal was appalling, and that I was extremely disappointed, I had at the time of booking mentioned it was our anniversary, and as such had hoped maybe a little recognition could have been shown, instead our evening was spoiled. The following morning was a repeat of the night before, a cold breakfast, with crispy sat around all morning bacon, a burnt sausage dry inside, sunny side up eggs that had lost the will to smile, cold and grease, the beans were sad too, the coffee was ok, cold milk, and service that needed to improve on at least its intention to serve mindful that when one spends this kind of money, in a place like this, one expects at least some degree of feeling valued, wanted and welcome. We had lunch elsewhere, we had evening meal in the village, The Boot, wonderful in every aspect of the service content and delivery. The high light was when after lunch we returned on such a lively afternoon, we were again greeted warmly by the irish bar manager, who introduced us to an absolutely lovely lady who had a wonderful smile, which melted away the errors of our visit so far, indeed she very kindly loaned to me her blankets so that my wife and I could relax on the lawn and enjoy the afternoon sunshine, and a cold bucket of iced sparkling wine to indulge ourselves with, whilst listening g to the birds sing... Truth is I think this is a very lovely building, with I have no doubt a good reputation, and a good history of service, quality and style, pre COVID. I think that these testing times have negatively impacted on our visit, and for that I will say, I intend to return, we are human and things can go wrong, and during our visit this time they did, our anniversary was ruined, but the Irishman made us laugh, the lovely lady with a beautiful smile made us feel very happy, but the lady on reception, was way over worked, well and truly tired, clearly the hours and duties she was doing was way too much, and that is in my opinion why I believe the service she gave suffered, truly this COVID is hurting us all in more ways than one. I am sure normally this lady who seemed to doing everything from welcoming and checking in to restaurant and telephone calls, bookings ect was tired and her I think otherwise attentiveness was compromised. Even when leaving there was no one to ask if we had enjoyed our stay. Sadly we did not...but we will give the benefit of the doubt, and return, as we sincerely believe that this hotel right now is another victim of COVID, I am positive it is better than this moment we had positive that it normally delivers in every aspect of hospitality, positive that for us this weekend It was not to be. The gardens are a delight, the country lanes that carry you to this hotel are lovely, the location perfect, with much to do if you just want to travel around for a peak at the Cheshire countryside, Last but not least, I write this with much regret, I have no pleasure in writing anything negative, I just want the owners of this hotel to understand that the amount they are asking for the accomadation deserves Some respect in the perceived value of service, we are all suffering as a result of COVID, I run my business, and we too are challenged, but without a customer we are nothing, so whatever I can do to make my clients feel wanted, valued and appreciated, I will do, COVID or no COVID. I just hope that this review will encourage them to understand that a warm welcome means a lot, professional happy nicely delivered service is vital, and content is so important, lastly, appreciation, show appreciation, its worth a million....

Sleeping GiantWe had a good stay at Willington Hall based on a 2 night Groupon deal. A lot of considerations should be taken as they had only just reopened & in a transition from COVID closure. We found both the gardens & front of the Hall breathtaking. They have been excellently maintained since its construction in 1829. There are some wonderful interiors such as the staircase & the orangery. The Halls strong point is its very dedicated staff team. We were looked after very well by all but the star in this team is Michel. He has a genuine passion for his role & making guests feel as comfortable as possible. We dined both nights and recommend using the hotels restaurant. The Groupon deal included dinner on the first night, afternoon tea the second afternoon & breakfast on both mornings. The menu on the first night was of an average standard. The second night was truly fantastic (fillet steak). We thought the breakfast was fantastic also. Michel highlighted how much more would usually be on offer however, at the direction of the Government it had to be limited. From a constructive point, my view is that Willington Hall is a sleeping giant. It could be a 4 or 5 star establishment easily. It has the structure in place to achieve this however, the rooms look tired and neglected on the investment side of things. I totally agree they should be kept authentic and in line with its history. We stayed in Room 11 which had a great view of the front of the Hall. The bed was extremely comfortable, room spacious & an impressive looking walk-in shower. On the other hand, the heating appeared to be not working & an oil heater was provided. The paint work needed tending to with many scuff marks and the odd flaky patches. The shower pressure was the lowest Ive seen in any hotel & the screen was very loose. The general decor in the bathroom looked a little put together. As I previously stated, this venue is a sleeping giant. The potential is huge & with the passion of its current staff I honestly believe this could be something spectacular. We were happy with our stay however, both agreed if it had been a special occasion we would have been disappointed. Definitely worth another stay in our opinion.

A lovely friendly hotelStayed 2 nights on a groupon deal with 3 course meal and afternoon tea included. Can't fault the bedroom and facilities and staff really helpful and friendly. Very dog friendly. Beautiful setting with fab views from terrace over Cheshire Downs. Disappointed that the meal was from a limited menu. Would have been nicer if we could have chosen from main menu to a stated price and paid extra for anything over that price. Also the afternoon tea was minimal for 2 people. We observed other guests having afternoon tea ( obviously paying full price) and they received a cake stand each whereas we had one to share. Pleased with Covid 19 precautions that were taken by hotel. Would visit again but not on same deal........b& b preferable

Lovely stayWe stayed at Willington Hall Hotel as part of a Horse Riding package holiday. It is ideally located immediately next door to Willington Riding School. The hotel was very quiet which was due to the current pandemic. However, the hotel had all the necessary measures in place to ensure our stay was safe. All the staff were all very polite and friendly and willing to assist is any way they could. We stayed for four nights bed and breakfast. We had an evening meal and lunch and Afternoon Tea. All the meals were delightful. The bar and eating areas overlook the magnificent grounds with spectacular over the countryside. We would recommend this lovely hotel and will stay there again.
