Someone needs to buy the hotel and make it amazing its embarrassing for such a lovely town. For a prime site in such a gorgeous town how is this hotel so dreadful it totally lets the side down. Its an embarrassment to a beautiful town. We had such a lovely time visiting friends for half term and booked the spa hotel in the centre of town it was horrid. Dont book it ....itchy beds and hospital duvets, dirty bathrooms and spidery sinks, spooky furniture and dirty carpets. Someone clever needs to buy it and make it amazing. Its such a shame that its so awful. Probably would get It cheap as the owners obviously have no vision, or insight or business sense and dont care about it. Please someone buy it and make it good the town deserves it, its horrid and drags the town down.

Unkept, unclean and very rude owner.Stayed for one night with my partner, unfortunately didn't check Trip Advisor reviews before booking (schoolboy error). I called the hotel to check availability and facilities (I was looking for a hotel with a pool/spa that didn't require booking a time slot in advance and on site parking) I couldn't believe how cheap this hotel was (I fully understand now) and made the booking over the phone. On arrival you're greated with a quaint 600 year old coach house. It's qwerky split levels, eneven floors and wonky radiators only add the character of the exposed beams and low doorways. It's an old building that's been modernised at some point (probably 30 years ago when the current owners acquired the business). There's free WiFi in the room which is amazing for a building of its age, extension lead city, everywhere you look there's trailing leads, no trunking or conduit in sight. We were given a really nice room (26), split level with low beams. Lovely first impression but when you've been in for a while you start to see beyond the facade and it's quite disturbing. Spills and stains on the walls, floor and skirting. A bathroom rollerblind that falls off when you attempt to extend/retract it and needs to be adjusted in hand then replaced, no net curtains at the windows and tatty curtains. The handsoap dispenser in the bathroom is half empty with the last occupiers crusty remnants on the pump, ply board panels attached to the bath and sink probably in order to cover rather than repair? The fire procedure notice on the inside of the accommodation door is confusing just to look at, God help anyone who needs to make sense of it if an alarm activation takes place and sounders are going off around them. As there were only 2 (very flat) pillows and what must be a summer duvet as it was barely thicker than the cover it was encased in, we spoke to the porter on reception and requested 4 extra pillows and an extra duvet. When we returned to our room after a swim (i'll get this this shortly) we found 2 extra pillows and a single duvet with no duvet cover. Any bedding supplied to guests should have fresh linen but owing to the questionable stains covering the extra duvet fresh linen is a must. Facilities - we used the swimming pool/spa the evening of our arrival, the porter allowed access to what can only be described as derelict facilities. We were the only people in there which was nice although you could see we were being monitored by cctv which appears to be streamed directly into the reception area to be viewed by anyone waiting at the desk. The main entrance/reception is currently being used as a builders storage area and from the thick dust and grime on all surfaces hasn't been cleaned in months let alone in line with current Covid guidelines. The changing facilities are poorly maintained with disvarded towels and remnants of food on the floor. The only toilets to be found were out of bounds and smelt like they'd not be out of place in the original couching house. There was a used swimming nappy, crisps and milkshake bottle left at the poolside by previous guests, how long for is anyone's guess? A guy came down the stairs to the poolside and proceeded to decant the contents of two containers into the pool as we swam? I asked what he'd just added to the pool and he went on to explain that they were from the dehumidifiers and he didn't like to waste the water but it's OK as it is in fact just distilled water. After retuning the empty containers upstairs he returned and disappeared into the plant room only to return to the poolside with an empty bucket which he rinced out in the pool before filling and returning to the plant room? When he finished in the ant room he rinced his hands in the spa pool before leaving? It may have been a dosing system or other pool maintenance procedure but an explanation of the intended process would have been curtious prior to starting, as occupants of the pool we were a little bewildered as to what was being added to the pool we were in? For some reason known only to the proprietors the deeper area of the pool had pebbles/stones deposited, I can only assume to reduce the depth. These are a very unusual feature which are uncomfortable to stand on. The external door to the car park is fixed agar with a shelf bracket to facilitate a hose from outside feeding into the pool? Not only is this a highly unusual water feature it also causes an ice cold draft with UK weather in November. The continental breakfast was Laughable, as many other reviewers have covered, we checked what the procedure was regarding breakfast and was advised to go to the breakfast room and help ourselves to a tray, I foolishly assumed that meant there would be a self service selection of food on offer to select and take to a table on the tray. Couldn't have been further from the truth, upon entering the "Breakfast Room" we were confronted with a selection of no less than 3 plastic trays, each tray had a box of cereal, smakk jug of milk (nicely maintained at room temperature), an Aldi long life yoghurt, prepacked chocolate brioche bun, clingfilm covered bowl of summer berries (nice you would think but no, watery, tasteless frozen Berry selection allowed to defrost at room temperature), a portion of butter and marmalade, clingfilm covered plate containing a precut roll (probably Warburton) with a slice of cheese and continental meat of some description? When our orange juice and coffee was brought to the table I asked if toast was available? only to be told that due to Covid they didn't stock bread to put in the toaster? I asked why they supplied marmalade on the tray and was told that it could go on the roll if I didn't want meat or cheese. My partner consumed what was palletable and decided to have a look around the conservatory and terrace whilst I finished my coffee. On returning to the table she wanted to show me the dire condition of the areas she'd walked around. Blown/dirty windows that you couldn't see through, piles of rubbish and broken furniture discarded into recesses and corners, mismatched/ancient patio furnishings with ashtrays overflowing with cigarette buts and napkins whilst full of water, stairwells with cobwebs that wouldn't be out of place in a Disney haunted mansion, stained/worn carpets that had Covid stickers placed in an attempt to disguise the poor condition and a water damaged ceiling. Whilst looking at this we saw a member of staff (which turned out to be one of the owners) we asked about the history of the building and how long they'd owned for half expecting to hear they'd recently acquired the business. The lady explained that they'd been the proprietors for 30 years. We expressed our concerns with the things we'd experienced and witnessed during our stay and whilst initially was apologetic and explaining that they have a contracted cleaner for their linen and they had been closed for a length of time during the year due to Covid and was concerned about the pending lock down. We said that her concerns were understandable but didn't equate to what was obviously a lack of competent housekeeping and neglect of maintenance for a prolonged period to which she quickly become in my view offensive and very unprofessional. We were speaking to the owner from the lounge/entrance to the spa whilst she was half way down a spiral staircase. During this conversation I moved my face mask down from my nose as my breath was causing my glasses to steam up, the owner commented on this exclaiming I was spreading germs by not wearing my face mast properly. This property hasn't adequately cleaned for a long time and is definitely not Covid compliant or being cleaned in accordance with government guidelines, I doubt very much that my nose being uncovered periodically will have any impact on the level of germs in this property. The sad fact is that this hotel could be a wonderful establishment with charm, character and fantastic facilities in the right hands. My advice to the owners would be that addressing the cleanliness and tired decor would definitely result in a much better guest experience and return better reviews and recommendations.

Unwelcoming in the extremeQuite apart from the hotel (with the exception of the lounge area/fireplace) being really rundown the service is appalling. When I received my order the receptionist/waitress just dumped the order on my table without looking at me or acknowledging my thanks. If this is how they treat their customers they really don't deserve any. I don't think it was a coincidence there was only 1 other customer there at the time I visited. Avoid if you value your self-esteem and value politeness!!

Excellent!Great style of hotel (I love the uneven floors and low timbers of this 16th century building). Obviously during the current crisis food was limited, but a nice tasty continental breakfast was very welcome. Pet friendly!! Hugely important to me as part of my business is transporting peoples pets. Big roaring fire in the lounge which with the temperature outside being close to zero was amazing. Very comfortable room, big double bed, tv, coffee tea etc. And o very deep bath/shower All in all I would highly recommend this establishment. (The sash window did have a small drought but the room heating was well equipped to deal with it).
