Severe failings during fire drillI recently stayed here with a group of friends and had a mixed stay. When we arrived the hotel (at the check-in time) we were told that our room was not ready, the lady behind the desk bluntly said it's not ready and for us to come back in an hour. We did so to find out the room was still not ready and we would have to wait. After complaining they did give us a complimentary drink at the wonderful bar at the top of the hotel (which has some fantastic views of the surrounding areas). We had some complimentary snacks given as the rooms were still not ready! Eventually, we were given permission to go to our rooms and they were modern, clean and very spacious! They were excellent and we could not ask for more from a hotel room. The trip then took a concerning turn for the worse. At 5:00 am the fire alarm went off and we were instructed by the tannoy system to leave the building promptly. Having been awake as we were watching the UFC fight, our group were changed promptly and we were the first to leave the building (despite being on the 8th floor). Being teachers at an international school we are drilled into being able to evacuate the building within minutes in a calm and controlled manner. What unfolded was a scene of poor organisation and something that has put me off ever staying at this hotel again. During our walk down the emergency staircase, we saw 1 male (who we guess was the night shift security guard) running up the stairs trying to do a sweep of the corridors. As we were the first to leave the building, we had no idea where the emergency assembly point was, no signposts were visible, no maps were present to show us where this location was. Having done many fire drills with our profession we found a place we felt was adequate to meet until staff members came out to instruct us where to go. As time hit 10 minutes, we noticed there was no staff present, nobody knew where we should meet and what was going on. People were still coming out of the building at this point. 5 or so minutes later we were told by the stressed security guard that we could go back in the building, so the guests all flooded back in, but the mind-blowing thing was that there was guest still coming out of the emergency exit to a place where there were no more people waiting. A few things I found deeply concerning, there was only 1 member of staff present during an emergency situation, no guidance nor leadership. If this had been a real fire then I dread to think what chaos would have unfolded. No headcount was taken to see if anyone was still in the building, and by the fact, people were still coming out after it was deemed safe to go back into the building is shocking. From what we were told the fire alarm went off as when you shower and leave the bathroom food open it triggers the fire alarm. This is a major flaw and is something that the hotel should be looking to rectify. As mentioned in the heading, the hotel was lovely but as far as the evacuation procedure it has some serious failings and on this experience, I pray to God that there is never a real emergency at WestCord WTC Hotel Leeuwarden in the middle of the night as I do not feel there are sufficient producers in place to ensure maximal safety in getting all guests out in a controlled and quick manner.

Nice business hotel on the outskirts of Leeuwarden city centreOn a stopover to Vlieland, we stayed one night at the Westcord WTC in Leeuwarden. The hotel is on the outskirts of the city centre, 5 minutes by car to the heart of Leeuwarden. Be aware: there is not much in the immediate surroundings in terms of restaurants or shops except for the casino. Check-in went smooth and the lady at the front desk was very friendly. Room was modern, nice and comfy with good airconditioning. Parking was next to the hotel (parkinglost B2/B3) and free. As it is close to the highway, we were able to reach the ferry to Vlieland in no time. The hotel suited our purpose very well and we would definitely consider staying her again!

Nice hotelWe stayed at this hotel for 4 nights. Check in was very swift, even with all the extra COVID rules that needed to be explained and form filled in. The room on the 5th floor was quite large. Two single beds, chairs, lots of storage space, bathroom and separate toilet. Coffee and tea making facilities as well as a safe and aircon. The room was clean. Our only trouble was that it was filled with mosquitoes. We were kept awake by them all night and when we started catching them, there was no end to the number.... that was a bit annoying. Breakfast was done in shifts (because of COVID), and on the face of it well thought through. However, when the third shift started, because there was no time left for the staff to prepare the room properly for the next shift, it was all a muddle. The staff was run off their feet, trying their best to make it work, but they were left no time to lay tables and refill the buffet or coffee machines. Guests sometimes weren't happy with how it was all going. We really felt for the staff, as you could see they were giving 200%. We felt they were not appreciated enough by some guests and also by management. We thought they were doing an amazing job in very difficult circumstances. The hotel is a good 25 minutes walk from the city centre in a quiet location next to the casino and WTC. It has its own parking lot (which we had free access to, but not sure that goes for all the guests).

High rise hotel overlooking the area with good serviceAfter our first trip early July to Zwolle we went up north for our second trip of this unusual year. As there are not many infections in that area we went to Leeuwarden, capital of Friesland and reserved this hotel with free parking, located a bit from the city center. The hotel has 11 floors with a nice restaurant on the top floor (Élevé, reviewed separately), We had a room on the 7th floor but waiting times with 3 elevators, even with a 2 persons per ride restriction, were acceptable. The room is big and the beds are long and comfortable. My partner got another head cushion as they were quite soft but for the rest everything was fine. The bathroom was large and had a good walk-in shower. We could make tea on our room and there was also a small safe. Plenty of room and cupboards to store your things and everything was there including a large flat-screen TV. The breakfast was served on the ground floor and measures to prevent any infection were well taken. Check-in, wider arranged seating and a marked route (which could be indicated more clearly). Also the distribution of breakfast items was organized properly with single portions prepacked and hand-out of bread and fresh cooked egg dishes on demand by the staff. Sanitizing the coffee maker after each use and keeping enough distance was mostly done OK. The variety of items to have a decent breakfast was satisfactory. They also rent out bikes (but reserve early) and the only minus point is the distance to the parking area and the fact that there is hardly a possibility to unload the car in front of the hotel. Distance to the city center is about 20 minutes walking so OK. And for people who like to make a bet the Casino is just around the corner.
