Good hotel for WesternersThis review is a bit late but I wanted to give it to help other Western guests. First off is to say that if you are unfamiliar with mainland China (as we were) then a hotel like this is a must. We were tempted to go cheaper but Im so glad we didnt as this hotel was quite a haven to us after bing out and about in the day. Just knowing you could come back to a western style toilet was such a relief (if youll pardon the pun!). The rooms are large, comfy and well equipped (if sometimes with odd items like gas masks in the wardrobes!). We were on a very high floor but the lifts were efficient and we never had to wait long. Our rooms had windows between bedroom and bathroom but a roller blind provided privacy. We only ate breakfast at the hotel and this was very good, A real mixture of foods from Chinese to Sushi to Western (though the western food didnt look appetising so we avoided!). We tried to sample most of the foods and you could even have freshly stir fried noodles. Closing time is very efficient and prompt so make sure youre down in time! A small shop is outside the hotel too so great for getting in drinks/snacks for your room. The one part of the hotel that we couldnt cope with was the swimming pool. If you are Western...avoid! The changing rooms were damp and mouldy. The pool itself seemed ok but there were mozzies in there and the other swimmers were spitting at the side of the pool (this is culturally endemic throughout China) so we hot-footed it out of there as soon as we could. So in conclusion this rather grand looking hotel is definitely one I would go back to and would recommend..just dont use that pool! ;)

Smells like Smoke! For frame of reference, I am American and typically am very satisfied with the average Sheraton, Westin, Hyatt Place or a comparable hotel in the states. I thought the Wanyou Conifer was way worse than any of the chain hotels I typically stay at, and would not recommend this anyone! The decor reminds me of the 70s or 80s, especially if you go to the breakfast dining room. The entire hotel smells like smoke even though they have certain floors that are non-smoking floors. The lobby area smells nauseating because they try to mask the heavy smoke smell with artificial fragrance. We stayed in the executive club room and although it was decorated with slightly nicer finishes, the bed wasnt that comfortable and the bathroom was still very outdated. The breakfast buffet is awful. Lots of different choices but very poor quality food. The only thing I will give credit toward this hotel is the staff. They are very attentive, kind, and are eager to please. Also, the location is really convenient because the stairs to the subway is right in front of the lobby (you dont even have to cross the street).

Good food. Clean and comfortable hotel. This hotel is comfortable and clean. The staff are friendly and helpful. The breakfast offers lots of choice, with something for all tastes. The evening meal offered our party the choice of many local, authentic dishes all expertly prepared.

DowngradeWe were on a package tour and, although this hotel has all the right appearances, it fell short of the standards set by our previous hotel. To me the evening meal was inferior. The breakfast was, on previous experience, poor. What I found totally unexceptable, and my comparison will only be understood by British people of a certain age, was a member of staff emptying plates into containers on a trolley she was pushing around like the old Woolworths cafeteria days.

Room smelled of smokeWe stayed here one night on our China RSD tour and our room had an overpowering smell of smoke and the carpets were badly stained which didn't give a great impression that the rest of the room was that clean. It certainly didn't have the same standards as the rest of the accommodation on the tour. Breakfast and dinner were pretty standard corporate buffet fayre. Oh, and bathrooms that have full size clear windows from the bedroom. What IS that all about?
