Just go!I was presenting a paper at a conference in Chiang Rai and the organisers put me up in the Wanasom Wellness Resort. I had no idea what was in store; but if you are offered this opportunity, just say yes and go! The campus of Mae Fah Luang University (named after "The mother who came from the sky"; the present king's mother, who used to visit hill tribes by helicopter, working tirelessly to bring alternate occupations to the rampant drug trade, back in the day) is beautifully landscaped and planted and the Wanasom Resort is tucked away on a winding country road within the campus. Many of the staff are students learning their trade, eager to please and happy to help. The foyer has a low table cut from the centre of an enormous tree: a single slab of polished wood; with a feeling of calm elegance provided by the high ceilings and wide-open sliding doors. I was driven down the hill by golf cart to my room, which was predictably enormous. I arrived after nightfall which is always the best, because when i awoke and lifted the blinds it was to find that my personal verandah overlooked a photogenic lake with mist drifting on the surface and a boathouse tucked into the corner of the view. Jaw-dropping, an ethereal Chiang Rai hill-top experience. The room had polished wooden floors, the bathroom was huge, and everything spoke of elegance and calm. I had some local friends who joined me for the weekend after the conference and I put them up at the Resort to say thanks for driving over; they too were so impressed with the beauty of the location. Breakfast was in an open-sided building overlooking the amazing lush vegetation and the lake. You do need your own car as the hotel is well out of town; but if you seek calm, quiet luxury in a beautiful part of the world, this is a great choice. Chiang Rai is about 20 km away and the Myanmar border is not far north, or Lao PR to the east; masses of amazing locations to visit and spectacular hills rising steeply from intensively planted fields. There is even a 'beach': a bend in the river with food stalls...

Do not go there!Announcement is just utterly wrong. The rooms are not clean. Basic food for breakfast. No food at lunchtime or supper. Place is very isolated. Noise in the morning. Staff speaks no or very limited English and kindly ignores any complaints (bed too hard, dirty bathroom,...). For the same price you get a much better deal in Chiang Rai city.

Nice relaxing hotelI got the room where can see the dam. It's so wonderful. The room is big and clean. It serve very delicious breakfast. However, the location is not the best. It's quite far from the city. Staffs were friendly.

If you need silenceI had stay here for 2 nights. This place is at the back end of Mae Fah Luang University. It is quiet. You have to buy stuff you want before reaching this place as there is no shop around. And it is quite far to go to the nearest 7-11 and you have to have a car or motorcycle. Room is big (building F) with the balcony. Beds are a bit hard as the bed at our home. Bathroom is big with separate toilet. There is bathtub and shower but the drain system is not running well. It will take around 15 minutes to drain used water after shower. Wifi is provided. Breakfast is included but just few choices.

Idyllic resort with breathtaking viewsI was put up in Wanasom by the university as I was speaking at a conference there. Travelled with my mother and small child. What a lovely experience! The resort is truly idyllic, with fantastic views and lush greenery all around. It is set away from the main university buildings so the atmosphere was so peaceful and relaxing. Breakfast in the open air restaurant was limited but breathtaking as you look out at the lake and mountains covered in morning mists. The room and bathroom was very spacious and the bed was comfortable. Strong WiFi all around the resort. The balcony with built in seat provided a good spot to look out onto the serene lake. The resort is kept spotless by the cleaners and manicured nicely by the gardeners. There's an electric buggy at your service to go to anywhere within the resort if you don't feel like walking. Only minor negatives: staff don't speak English so we had to rely on a translation app. Air-conditioner was fiddly but after a while we figured it out. Shower water temperature can be unstable, so we needed to be careful when bathing the baby. There was no info packet in the room, which would have been helpful. It was unfortunate that the spa was undergoing renovation while we were there (no noise though!). If we get to come back, we wouldn't think twice about staying here again. Wanasom is a real hidden gem!
