Wakkanai Grand Hotel - Reasonably priced hotel for the areaThe hotel is approximately a 10 - 15 minute walk from the train station. Definitely recommend that you ask for directions and a map to make it easier before leaving the station. As for the area around the station, there is very little, no shopping except for a drug store, and a few restaurants and bars near the hotel. This hotel is great for use as a base to explore other areas near and around the region. As you head further north to the end of the train line, hotel prices increase dramatically. The included breakfast is very different from what Westerners would expect, as the dishes are very typical Japanese. If you are open to different culinary experiences, for breakfast you have come to the right place, all made right on the premises by the locals. The hotel has available for guests a hot spa, one for men and another for women, and free internet is available in the rooms. As for the rooms, they are quite reasonably sized, and no one should get claustrophobic. Would I recommend staying here: Yes Would we return: Yes

Very good dealWe had half-board for two days, and as far as you like Japanese sea food, this is a very good deal. People are very friendly and helpful despite of their limited knowledge of the English language. You can use the inhouse onsen ( hot springs ) for free, the JR station is a three minutes walk away, and a taxi to the ferry terminal for Rebun island or the Russian island of Sachalin costs 1100 Yen. The hotel is quiet, and in the lobby you `ll find a working WiFi. Final recommandation: a very good choice.

DisappointedWhen reserving a room be sure to ask for the Main Tower (renovated in 2009). The New Tower is NOT new, it is extremely outdated and all the rooms smell like stale smoke. We tried to switch rooms because the smell is so bad but the front desk staff informed us that the non-smoking Main Tower rooms are fully booked. She was nice and offered us some air freshener spray but it's really not helping.

A good value in the heart of WakkanaiThis reasonable priced hotel is located directly in the heart of the city's surprisingly good nightlife. You can find really good restaurants and cocktail bars just a few seconds walk away from the hotel. Also, the train station can be reached within a 15 minute walk. Make sure to get a room in the main tower and not in the "new tower" since those in the "new" annex are quite outdated whereas those in the main tower are very modern and nice. Equipped with a large bathtub, a massage chair, moveable beds and nice lighting. However all rooms are spacious and clean. The breakfast is really good Japanese home cooking featuring some rare ingredients like mountain vegetables only found in the area. Free internet and onsen hot spring baths are provided as well. Definitely recommended for a stay in Wakkanai.
