We will definitely come back. We really love Wakamatsu RyokanThis is not our first ryokan experience, but this has been the best ryokan we have ever stayed in. Dining & breakfast is in separate private dining rooms. And our room was spacious and comfortable, with an amazing view of the Tsugaru Straits. Their Japanese staff were so friendly and welcoming. We felt at so at home in this ryokan. Yuri-san explained everything from the rooms high tech controls to us in English and I communicated in my limited Japanese. Their kitchen also did their best to accomodate my food allergy. The food and service surpassed our expectations. This place was quiet, relaxing, private and discreet. Very classy.

Amazing staffThis ryokan is one of the best we have stayed in. The staff always greeted us with a smile and enthusiasm and bent over backwards to accommodate our every need. There were lots of little extras, like fresh fruit and coffee for breakfast in the lounge, complimentary dessert and drinks at night, live music at night etc. it is $$ but worth it. The public onsen is lovely with a private onsen if you prefer. The meals were outstandingly good.

WonderfulWe were received with the usual perfection and politeness, sat down given a tea and a cake and then brought to our room. The view is perfect. We arrived fairly late, so we headed straight for dinner which was wonderful. Dinner consists of 9 courses. Not everything is to our european palate, but the quality and service is outstanding. The Onsen is lovely with a hot bath outside with a beautiful view. The only slight drawback is the relatively inflexible times for dinner and breakfast

WorstBooked through hotels.com. After we checked in, we were told that our reservation did not include dinner. WTF - does any onset ryokan not include dinner? I paid $360 to stay at a crappy, outdated room with no dinner?! Are you kidding me? I would not recommend this place to anyone. Be aware. If you are the hotel manager, come talk to me now. I just checked in.

Luxury ryokan experienceWe stayed 2 nights on the top floor and it was a highlight of our 10 day Hokkaido trip. The attentive staff, well maintained and clean premises (despite being old) was expected. The fantastic sea views and quiet neighborhood added to the tranquility. The food served here was also excellent. We were certainly wowed by the breakfast, which was far from the the typical buffet spread found everywhere else. Even the little matcha snack served to you when you check in was delicious and weve never managed to find it sold anywhere else so if you find it oishi like we did, do remember to buy a few boxes home when checking out. A very good ramen joint can be found a few minutes walk away, but youll have to catch a taxi for other eateries and visiting other places in Hakodate. But if youre happy to just spend time exploring 7-11, Lawson and FamilyMart nearby for interesting food to make for a quiet and economical meal in the comfort of your room, then its another experience you should have. Its definitely a very expensive ryokan but worth trying in our opinion. Its now our benchmark for other ryokans that we may visit in future.
