Descripción general
The htotel is located in one of the most exciting and unique parts of the world - the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Situated at the 1220 m level on the rim of the Kilauea Crater. The national park features the only active volcano in the state of Hawaii. This is a moderate property with 42 rooms on 2 floors. Perhaps the most rustic and intimate hotel in all of Hawaii. The Lounge has a fire place lit for most of the year as well as a dining room overlooking the crater.

A very worthwhile, unique experienceIf you're staying in the Kona area, one day simply isn't enough time to drive the island and see and do all the incredible things there are to do in the area. An overnight stay is required, and I definitely recommend Volcano House for that. Nothing can make a trip to the big island more unique than looking out the window of your room (or from your lanai, if you're able to get one of the rooms that has one) and seeing the volcano right in front of you. When I was there, the only activity was a lava lake in the crater, which gave off a spectacular red glow at night. And staying here gives you easy and quick access to the trails in the area to view it from different angles if you'd like. The hotel rooms themselves are fairly small and basic, but more than adequate. Besides, it's not like you're there to spend a bunch of time in your room. The hot water was fine, and the food in the restaurant was good. The only weird thing was that you have to hope your neighbors next door are very quiet. There is absolutely no sound proofing under or around the door to the adjoining room, and you can hear EVERY word they say, even if they aren't talking loudly. But other than that, everything was fine. Hot water, comfortable bed, and a little coffee maker. They had two bottles of water in there for $1 each... which is a bargain considering that the restaurant, for some reason, charges $3 for the same exact bottle. I don't think I've ever seen a hotel bar/restaurant charge 3x more for something than the mini-bar does, but, lesson learned. So, if you're looking for a unique experience for a place to crash, so you can get an early start on your sightseeing in the morning (I had Chain of Craters road entirely to myself the next morning), then look no further.

Perfect for a trip to VNP!We did a 2 night stay on the Big Island for the sole purpose of visiting the Volcanoes National Park. We arrived after dark, but the lodge was easy to find and check in. Warm cookies awaited us each night. We ate at both restaurants onsite which were very good experiences. They each have views of the crater. I requested a crater view with my reservation and was lucky enough to get it. There is no elevator here, so if you have difficulty carrying luggage upstairs, ask for a first floor room. There is a nice fireplace in the lobby that was a welcome experience after a long rainy day in the park.
