Best little hotel on the hill!We initially rented our ski equipment from then, as we were staying in Yamanouchi township. Once our week was up down there, we quickly grabbed a space here and never looked back! We met so many friendly people during our stay, and the Captain and his family could not be better hosts. Having a soak in the wonderful hot Onsen at the end of each days skiing was a highlight, as was the evening meals. The Captain took time to explain what each food item was, as the meals are traditional Japanese and were OUTSTANDING every night. A hearty breakfast was also provided and we found we didn't need to get lunch. It was definitely "ski in, ski out" and we had the best ski holiday ever. We have every intention of going back next season. The decor is dated, but it is the atmosphere that counts!!!

Family-friendly, comfortable and cozy, a real keeperOur family spent four nights at Villa Alpen in January 2018. It is conveniently located in the Sun Valley ski village (easily accessed using the shuttle bus from Nagano station) and just a couple of minutes walk from the shuttle stop. It is a family-run business and everybody there was so welcoming and accommodating from the minute we arrived to the moment we left. The villa is not new or flash, but it is homely and comfortable. We stayed in a Japanese-style tatami room that had its own wet room (the Western style rooms do not have a bath/shower, and you have to use the onsen baths on the basement level instead). This was convenient as we were travelling with our toddler and I was six months pregnant at the time so the onsen baths didn't suit us. They also supplied a cot for our toddler to sleep in. The room was basic but cozy, warm and comfortable. Breakfast and dinner are communal, held in the large dining room on one of the lower levels. Breakfast is basic (continental style buffet with coffee/tea, juices, toast, fruit, scrambled eggs and other basics) but more than enough to get you started for the day. Dinner every night was AMAZING - a traditional Japanese meal with multiple dishes that was different every night. So much care and attention was put into these dinners and they were just outstanding every time. The staff are really lovely and attentive, and they were very sweet to our toddler as well. They even made a small birthday cake to celebrate her 2nd birthday and turned down the lights so that everybody in the dining hall could sing to her - completely unexpected and lovely! My daughter loved the children's play room on the lobby level, and there is also a bar next to reception with a wood fire, couches, games, television/DVDs, etc. The Captain was full of very good help and advice; he let us borrow a baby carrier for our walk to the snow monkey park (turns out this was VERY good advice!) and his son Ken helped us get our luggage to the bus stop in snowy conditions at the end of our stay. While I didn't do any skiing myself, my husband hired equipment from the villa which was quite affordable. He said that the ski-in/ski-out and location was great (easy access to many of the runs on the mountain using the ski lifts just outside or free shuttle bus). The ski area just outside of the villa is great for family skiing, tobogganing and just mucking around/throwing snowballs/building snowmen/etc. The villa is also conveniently located nearby to a few other hotel restaurants, so you're only a 2-minute walk away if you want to eat somewhere different. If you need 5-star accommodation then this isn't going to be the place for you, but if you want a great location with warm and engaging hosts and a family-friendly atmosphere, then you will love Villa Alpen! We will definitely come back here again next time we come to Shiga Kogen.

Cozy friendly Ski in/out hotelTravelling alone I was looking for a friendly comfortable place with good access to buses and snow. I found that here and was impressed by the hospitality and friendliness of everyone particularly the Captain who has a genuine concern for your well being. I used tripadvisor to weed out what I didn't want - noodles for breakfast and a smoky room full of old Japanese guys. I'm not a fan of buffet breakfasts but I was perfectly happy here with the fruit, toast and eggs. Dinner was excellent. Tapas style mix of Japanese and western food, plenty of it and served at 6pm sharp every day. The food was best of any hotel I had stayed in Japan and I am a frequent visitor. It would be fair to describe the hotel as dates but I would say a time capsule of a luxury 1970's Japan is how I see it. Everything worked: lift, heaters, hot water etc. Very good onsen and the bar area was delightful. Most of the other guests were European/American/Australian with a few Japanese. My room was big (very big by Japan standards) and comfortable with good views of the piste outside.

Ski in Ski out, warm, friendly, English speakingBeen coming for 15 years. The Captain, Hiroko, Ken and Ryoko couldnt do enough for us. Love sitting by the fire in the bar playing Jenga and UNO. Snow is always good from January to April. Great for a family or group. Western or Japanese rooms.

Another Fabulous Family Holiday at Villa Alpen! We recently stayed at Villa Alpen for a week to celebrate a milestone birthday. What a lovely surprise to find that the owners, Captain and his family had been quietly renovating the place! Its now looking fabulous which includes new carpet, new lift, new beds in the western rooms and a lot of decluttering done! The in-house Onsen has been freshened up and the forest outside has been lit at night! We saw many snow monkeys outside our hotel room during the week as an extra bonus! The food included in our package was delicious and plentiful. The ski-in ski-out location is so handy and there was night skiing on Saturday night on the ski run outside the Villa. Will definitely return next season with our family to enjoy the 5 star hospitality from Captain and his family! If youre planning a ski holiday this season, its a definite consideration.
