    Good Solid Stay

We stayed recently and were very pleased with the visit. The rooms are very clean and the pool nice (if a bit chilly). Gardens and view beautiful. If you do stay then visit Restaurant Viola which you reach by leaving the property via the side gate and climbing up the hill via the steps. Crazy but amazing. Owners are new and keen to make a good go of it I think. Good luck

Nice small hotel with nice view on garden and ocean from the terrace and garden

Excellent small hotel, where Ben and Theresa welcome you very friendly. The indoor swiming pool opened on the garden is perfect for relax in any weather circumstances. Plan a time to taste the Madeira wine produced in the domain, 40 years old wine !! You can park the car in the garden, and on evening they advice you a traditionnal restaurant which provide a driver service for free. Theresa mum prepared very good cakes for the breakfast, and the home made marmelade are excellent. Ours bathroom was very small, and the wood parket above us a bit noisy, but all the rest is excellent. we recommand this hotel +++

    The Genuine Madeira Experience

I've visited Madeira six times since 2008 and this is the perfect place to stay if you want to avoid the big hotels in Funchal. Hotel Vila Afonso is situated just outside of Estreito de Câmara de Lobos (walking distance) on the steep hillside overlooking the fishing village of Câmara de Lobos (a five minute drive). The views from the hotel grounds are breathtaking. I stayed in a Superior Room which was spacious, extremely comfortable, private and quiet. Ive never slept better in a hotel anywhere. There is no wifi in the rooms but it is accessible and free in the hotels common area. This common area (the pool is just adjacent) is a great place to hang out, meet and chat with the other guests, and where the delicious buffet-style breakfast is served every day. If you are without a car, the bus to and from Funchal runs frequently out of Estreito de Câmara de Lobos during the workweek (less so on the weekends). Taxis are always at hand in Estreito but, if youre not up to making the trek into the village, the hotel owners are happy to arrange a taxi for you. Speaking of the owners, Teresa and Ben are the perfect hosts. Everything about the hotel is an example the enjoyment and passion that they have for making their guests comfortable and welcome in Madeira. It is impossible to imagine Hotel Vila Afonso without them.

Quality B&B Hotel, Friendly and Attentive owners, Excellent Location

Excellent small hotel with very good facilities and amazing views, good location close to Funchal but far enough out to be away from the crowded large hotels, close to the quaint fishing town/harbour of Camara de Lobos. If you decide to hire a car it's excellently placed to reach all areas of the island - we went to the North, East and West coasts and a number of central locations and no journey took longer than 45 minutes. Our room was excellently furnished with a large four poster bed, TV, comfy chairs, and a separate dressing area and bathroom.

    Fantastic B&B, Lovely Host

Teresa is a particularly nice host, she goes out of the way to please and is very nice to talk to and get information from. On two nights she rang a restaurant and booked a table for me, and all of the restaurants I dined at had a free pick up service - I recommend Vila do Peixe. The rooms are comfortable and clean, perhaps the TV is a bit old/small but it didn't bother me. There is a lovely garden to sit in, either just to relax, or to have breakfast in with a lovely coastal view below; there is a nice pool too. Breakfast itself was a bountiful continental spread, with a good selection of mostly homemade/fresh items, particularly a lovely fresh fruit salad but also lovely bread, rolls, and homemade jam; some people might wish to have muesli though, which is not available. The property is very central for exploring the island and doing walking activities, it is quite close to the main motorway that runs along the south of the island and there is also a good supermarket not far away. There are marvelous walks to be done from Boca da Corrida which is in the mountains above, reached by initially driving up the road that Vila Afonso is situated... though you will need SatNav to find the final viewpoint/walking start! A few little things I to mention... though I would DEFINITELY stay here again. For the first time it is not easy to find the property, I think it would be nice to mention in the details on the Booking.com page that one exits on Junction 5 from VR1. Parking is quite a challenge on-site, the driveway is very tight for parking cars and passing, and at the top the slopes for parking are very steep - I recommend either reversing into the drive or reversing out, as trying to turn around at the house is difficult. Finally, it would be nice to update the shower in the bathrooms so that one could adjust the height of the shower head.
