  Homecoming in Spier

  A stay at Van der Valk Hotel Spier is for us feeling as a kind of homecoming. It starts with the very friendly and profesional staff at the reception desk and it goes on during the whole time you're staying here. The rooms are spacious, comfortable and clean. A real classical ( in the good sense) Valk expirience. The breakfast is extended and of exellent Valk quality. In the back of the hotel there is the entrance to a lower floor where you can store your bike. Be careful it has a steep slope!

  Excelente!!

  Muy buen hotel en todos los sentidos: instalaciones (limpias, baño enorme, restaurant recién remodelado, terraza...), atención (nos dejaron hacer check in temprano, nos ayudaron a encontrar sitios de interés), ubicación...todo inmejorable! Sin duda la mejor opción si vas a Drenthe

  Below Valk-standard; too many flaws

  Hotel location cant be beaten, near A28 exit but also smack near a large forest and heather nature reserve; good public transport during weekdays but none during weekend. And pool/sauna is also excellent for a hotel, with views on the garden and good facilities. Also nice TV with many channels, room instructions and payperview; and good bathrooms (shower and tub) and beds. Walking map free from the reception but its hugely outdated on the available and signposted trails. Far too many limitations however, at least a full star below the 2 other Valk-hotels we stayed in during last year: * Starts totally clumsy with 3 PR e-mails suggesting adding a dinner or breakfast to the booking, while it was a (correctly honoured) package booking with breakfast and 1 dinner included. * Standard rooms are on the small side, and cost more than what they are worth in other Valk hotels. * Breakfast is good on breads and dairy/muesli/fruit side, but far too limited choice of hot dishes. * Dinner was bland (e.g. tasteless Salmon), the style of cooking and dishes for which Valk was notorious 20+ years back but most of their hotels grew beyond it. Not this one. * Room maintenance was not great, also close to clumsyness. Found a clean sock of someone else hidden between the bedsheets (dont the laundry staff check for these)? Room phone was broken. Wifi was great uptil lunch on Saturday; after that the smartphone kept service, the laptop for the next 24 hours simply got Hotel Spier connected, no Internet. Reception simply sent us back telling must be your PC, reboot while at next destinations the wifi worked great and all advice did not help. They should have been more helpful and supply e.g. the alternate wifi (for conferences) password; its either a glitch on Valk side or a feature (capping a connection after too many Gbs used) which their own staff does not know about. Overall maybe recommended for a 2 to 3 star bargain price, for current 4 star price its a very clumsy failure.

  Lovely location

  Stayed here with a group of 9 people as it was local for our meeting the following day. Our Dutch hosts recommended it as the stay there themselves when visiting the area. It is situated in a national park area and is popular with walkers and cyclist's as the park has paths through it. The rooms are very comfortable, clean and well maintained. The food in the restaurant is very good and is popular with the locals not just hotel residents. Highly recommend the "mustard soup"

  Nice stop, good service and good food!

  Had a stop at Van der Valk Spier-Dwingelo. Just wanted a not-too-big bite, having had a late lunch. At 20 p.m. the waitress even showed us the lunch menu! Now, that's great! We both a a small dish, but nevertheless more than we could handle and of great taste. The salmon was perfect and the clubsandwhich also plenty and very good. Very friendly staff.
