    Cool Rustic Hotel

Stayed here while in town for work. Quaint little hotel in the center of the downtown district within easy walking distance of lots of shops and wine bars. I stayed in a Stickseed room. Room was good, bed comfortable and rustic charm. Consider staying here if youre ever in town.

A lovely visit to the past

I know Benicia very well, having gone to HIgh School there and visiting my Mother during the years following. But I had never stayed in this fixture, one of the oldest operating hotels in California! I was determined to make up for this failure, and I'm really glad that I did. We checked in in the late afternoon, and were taken to our second floor room, the Victoriana. We were immediately charmed by the atmosphere and the furnishings, the old photographs on the wall, and the beautiful oak bed headboard. We were also pleased with the elevator that ferried our luggage up! We spent some time in the restaurant for some drinks and a bite to eat, then retired to the luxury of the bed, which was marvelously comfortable. Yes, it's got TV, a Jacuzzi tub, and other 21st Century embellishments, but what was really wonderful was the feel of spending the night in 19th century comfort. Loved it, will do it again!

Cancelled my reservation at the last minute

They overbooked, and cancelled my room 24 hours before a busy holiday weekend. And they did it by email instead of calling me, so I didn't realize it until I showed up on Friday night. Even though I had confirmed with them a few days before. The office is empty most of the day, and it was even hard to get in touch with someone to get my money refunded. A reservation here is nothing more than a gamble.

Quaint Doesn't Even Justify This Hotel

The hotel is on a corner in the old town. Although they claim to have hotel parking - it is a cruel joke. There is barely a driveway behind the hotel with a space. However, there is a permanent storage locker located in the driveway with various and assorted dumpsters and garbage cans in the driveway. Every time I checked the drive there was a car parked in it. Over the course of three days I never could park in the "Guest Parking." This of course leaves the street which is usually very busy and often there are activities which close the street making parking even more difficult. Then there are the time zones for parking on the street which make it even more interesting. When we arrived there was a street activity taking place. Since no parking was available I let my wife out in front of the hotel with the luggage and parked the car four blocks away. When I returned a man in the doorway of the corner bar (which is part of the hotel building) very nicely informed my wife and I that the doorway to the hotel was the next door over. A young man looking to be about 20 was standing in the doorway of the hotel and motioned us to that door. He had been standing there for a period of time looking at my wife with 3 suitcases and two carry-ons while she tried to figure out where to go and offered no assistance whatsoever. He was the desk clerk and made no effort to assist in any manner. Once we checked in I found that the toilet in our room was not working properly. I went downstairs to inform the same young man of the problem. His attitude and expression were "What do you expect me to do about it?" He did condescended to "look at it later." Need I say that the toilet did not work properly the entire time we were there. Before I leave the front desk do not expect anyone to be there very often. More than half the time no one was at the front desk. If there was a major problem I have no idea what you would do. Now to the room. No room service the first day. The chairs look and feel like they were purchased at a second hand store and are quite broken down. The chifforobe was terribly worn and the doors would not stay closed which made it interesting when moving around especially in the dark. With a Best Western and Holiday Inn in town you can do much better and probably save a few bucks a night. STAY AWAY FROM THE UNION HOTEL!

    Quaint and historic

This is a place with history. It could use some maintenance, however. The rooms are quaint and comfortable, but the plumbing had issues - as far as showering. Quite a bit of peeling wallpaper. We had a large party with about 7 rooms, and everyone had issues taking a shower. It is run like a Mom n Pop establishment, like the front desk person clocks out in the middle of the day. Very difficult to get someone on the phone. I tried to revise my booking, but the entire booking was canceled instead. After some back and forth, and a bit of worrying on my part, it worked out when we got there.
