A wonderful stayWe had 5 nights in Unguja at the end of a safari in the Masai Mara. My wife and I were on our honeymoon. We absolutely love our stay. It depends on your expectations but we weren't expecting absolute 5 star luxury as we knew the sort of place this was. The staff were very friendly albeit maybe a bit relaxed but that's island life! The food was incredible. Some of the other reviews are correct in their critiscism of their rooms and the fact they were a bit tomb like but you don't go to a place like Unguja lodge to shelter in your room! If they wanted to it could easily be improved with just finishing touches to villa floors etc but on the whole would definitely recommend if you are capable of managing expectations.

amazing spot but overpricedthe spot is pretty amazing. we just missed the beach. the villas are typical and have enough space. the resort is a very quite place. the drinks and food are overpriced but good quality. The service is very good.

Beautiful natural resortUnguja lodge is an idyllic resort set on the southern coast of Zanzibar. On arriving at the hotel we wound our way through narrow paths amongst the trees to our secluded lodge. Monkeys jumped through the trees above us and there were elephant shrews scuttling through the undergrowth. Set literally on the sea front, the enormous room was more of a house. With sections designed to be open to the woods surrounding it you feel both completely separate from the rest of the hotel while also being super close to nature. Setting out on the front with a book while watching the sun go down was a real highlight. When not in our room we were hanging by the pool or relaxing at the bar, reading or playing games. Outside the resort there were also plenty of activities to get stuck into. We did a handful of dives at some lovely sites spotting seahorses and colour changing squid. We also took a fabulous day trip to the sand bar. An hour long boat ride took us to a reef where we went snorkelling around some amazing coral. Once done there we stopped at the sand bar (photo attached) and had a seafood barbeque of the most awesome variety: squid, octopus, prawns, snapper and rock lobster. All with a couple of cold beers. Just spectacular. Overall we had such a great time with welcoming staff and attentive service. Would hugely recommend staying here to anyone who prefers a luxurious and authentic experience.

We still remember this amazing trip with great joyI was annoyed with myself when I realised today that a review I wrote some time back for this magical place never ended up being posted! It was so lovely that I feel really bad about it. My children loved being in the open sided villa overlooking the sea with monkeys in the trees above. We felt very safe with the security guards patrolling at all times. The villa was clean and spacious and very stylish. The pool is lovely and everything is clearly eco friendly and built in harmony with the environment. The staff were so friendly and helpful and we went on a tour with one of them to the local village. The owners are very conscious of being a positive part of the local community and economy. The food was utterly delicious and locally sourced and cocktails at the bar were a fun part of the day. The beach at low tide is the stuff of dreams and the silence and peace of this place is so relaxing. It is the perfect end of a safari unwind, cool down and relax. The highlight for us was the scuba diving. The excellent PADI coach took the children out to see turtles and every fish you can imagine and even a wreck. It was all very safe and highly organised. I do not know if it is still there in these Covid times so clearly check first but it was a life changing experience. We cannot recommend this eco, award winning, family run hotel more highly. GO!!!
