    Tufton Arms Hotel short stay

We spent three nights here. It is a great big old fashioned Hotel and we had a really good time, the staff and owner are friendly and helpful. The breakfast staff are hard working and the chef makes all his own jams and even the delicious veggie sausages. The choices of evening meals are all are so good we ate there every night.

I have stayed here several times now and we have such a warm welcome, food is outstanding and the rooms excellent. Nigel is a lovely relaxed host nothing too much trouble. Will definitely be staying again

    Two day with Groupon voucher

Lovely room....clean and well decorated. Voucher offered early check in Arrived at 1.45 ..no one on reception. Rang bell..no response. Thought we'd have a drink while we waited..no one serving in bar..no customers in bar (opening from 12 til 2) Went to pub a couple of doors down... Went back about in about an hour Checked in ...asked about evening meal...no info.." can show you last nights menu" Came down about 7 intending to have dinner in hotel. Went into bar area.. people were ordering but we werent approached by anyone. We later found we'd probably been in wrong area but there was no one to inform us of that Eventually went to pub a couple of doors down and had drinks and a meal. Next morning we realised there was a separate dining room for meals. Breakfast was v good. Evening we decided not to try and have dinner in the hotel ....so went to an Indian restaraunt. Overall a lovely hotel but lacking in communicating to guests what is available and where to obtain it ( information book..v sparse) A loss of revenue from us as we spent money in other establishments that we'd have happily spent in hotel. Our voucher ( that was purchased as a gift) offered early check in...wine and nibbles....none of these were offered or materialised even though we'd also had to pay a £ 40 supplement cos original booking had to be cancelled due to covid19. All in all a lovely hotel...good breakfast..but a massive lack of printed or verbal information Reading other reviews it does seem those of us with a voucher werent dealt with as promised on the voucher even though many of us paid ,£40 extra per couple due to rebooking because of Covid lockdown.

Back at the Tufton socially distanced of course.

I have stayed often at the Tufton. A characterful hotel in the old part of Appleby. The rooms are clean and comfortable some recently renovated in a more modern style. Front of house is Nigel who is well experienced in this family hotel business, his laid back manner can deceive ,he is amazingly efficient. The kitchen is ruled by David Nigels brother. He is an excellent chef with endless repertoire. He sources first class ingredients locally when in season and cooks in a modern British style. A well chosen good value wine list is available to compliment the food. Dont stay here if you need obsequious staff. Do stay here if you want a warm welcome. Excellent food and drink. Breakfast has fairly huge choice , even diy pancakes but perhaps a little reduced due to Covid. Looking forward to my next visit.

    Weekend in Appleby

Stayed here on Fri/Sat/Sun 23/24/25 October 2020 in Room 10. This was a Groupon deal carried over from pre COVID times. The 3 nights were purchased by a family member as a Xmas present in Dec 2019. The owner allowed us to move the stay to this weekend after the previous stay had been in the April lockdown. The stay was pleasant and the room of good quality. It was clean with a nice bathroom and included a decent breakfast on each day. The breakfast included cereals, fruit, yoghurts and a full English cooked to order. My wife request an omelette and they made this to order too. The owner has clearly made efforts to improve the decor of the hotel which is tired in some of the public areas. Our room had clearly been decorated as had the dining area. Some of the downstairs and staircases look very tired however. The hotel has a very good looking dinner menu too although we didnt try it. Way above ordinary pub or hotel food. We enjoyed our stay and Appleby has just enough to keep us occupied in the 3 evenings. We went to the lakes (Derwent water) and Keswick on Saturday (circa 30 mins drive) and Barnard Castle and Bowes House on Sunday (also 30 mins drive). The town is a decent location for both. In Appleby itself there are three or four pubs but the best by far is the Crown and Cushion only two doors down from the hotel. It has a good modern decor and a decent good priced menu. Very good COVID precautions too. The other two pubs off the square are ok but a bit spit and sawdust with the fair share of effers and Jeffers. There is a Spar store next to the hotel which sells everything you could possibly need. We also eat at the Indian restaurant across the road which was decent. Be aware they dont serve alcohol though. The only negative that Id say is that the owner charged us an extra £20/night for a COVID charge. We had discussed a payment over the telephone but Id understood it to be a one off payment but it was per night making an unexpected extra £60 (or £40 depending how you look at it) to pay. Im sure hed told me it was for cleaning (the rooms werent cleaned in the 3 days we were there) but then he said it was for staying at a different time of the year from the original booking. Looking at my notes from April hed also wanted £20/night extra for that booking too before anyone had heard of COVID. I understood Saturday nights had a £20 premium but not Friday or Sunday. Now this may just be a misunderstanding between us but Id make sure youre aware if theres going to be any supplemental charges before you go. Having said that it was a good stay and worth the price we paid.
