Not a bad hotel for Japan, location is nice for train access.

Dont expect the Marriott or Hilton here. This is a small Japanese hotel, it has 10 floors. The rooms are basic but they are clean and well maintained. First night we had a deluxe twin room. This room will sleep four and ours had a small 2 seater couch and 1 seater chair. TV is small LCD, maybe 22" and in the room there is a fridge and very small safe. The safe and fridge seem to be standard as they were in the twin rooms as well. Now the deluxe twin was not bad, it was small but we could have stayed in that room for a day if the weather was bad. Now the twin rooms (we had 2 of them next 2 nights), well lets say one of them had at max 2 feet clearance from the bed to either the wall or small desk. When my wife asked why my eldest daughter didnt push the stroller in the room and we got back "there is no room for it" we just laughed at the size of the room. Now the other twin was larger. But these rooms are small, typical Japanese style. Being used to American size rooms we couldnt really stay in the room for the day, then again if your just using the hotel to rest your head it works out. Now the bed is another story, 3 of us all complained that the bed was hard and we all woke up sore. Wouldnt recommend staying here to long unless you like hard bed. Not sure what is in the pillow but its not feathers. But if you go into a Japanese department store you will notice that they has some "interesting" fillings for pillows. I think they supposed to be actually better for your neck but they need getting used to. Breakfast is simple but it works. Nothing exciting, miso soup, some rice balls, potato salad and some other small things. There is tea and coffee. location wise, this place is at most 1 minute walk from the JR train station. Its the other side of the street but the Tobu line has better connections to Tokyo (express from Tokyo Skytree) that takes 1.5 hrs. But its about 15 min walk from the hotel to Tobu station, so if you dont have much luggage its an easy walk but we had a ton of bags so took a taxi, 710 yen. Theres a 7-11 about a block away and some restaurants close by. But bring someone who can speak Japanese else its point and hope for the best. Price wise not sure what your typical room runs out here but it was more expensive that what we paid at the Hilton in NRT. Then again we got a good deal there.

Clean, close to trains, eateries and attractions

Having stayed at many Toyoko Inn establishments over a number of years we rated this hotel highly. It is a relatively new hotel and is opposite the railway station. At most, a one minute walk. It is clean and safe. Check-in and out is, as always, fast and efficient, notwithstanding no English......but we are in a foreign land! The rooms are standard Toyoko Inn, with all the same fixtures and fittings, where-ever you are in Japan. For the newcomer, they might find the rooms a little small, but most rooms in Japan are small and more often than not two or three times the price. For us the beds are firm and extremely comfortable. We have always suspected that they are based on the Tatami mat. Pillows are reversable, beads on one side and soft on the other. Breakfast is the normal Japanese fare, very filling and enjoyable, and not shortage. Ashikaga is a town with more than its fair share or eateries, in all price brackets. Next door is a Hanamaru Noodle Shop (akin to a McDonalds) which is very cheap. Out the back door and to the right is a WONDERFUL French patisseri (recommend cream puffs), whilst about 50 meters to the left is a 7/11 store. Within a couple of hundred meters is a huge selection of eateries can be found. In some, no English, but you are always made welcome and can be assured of good food. The town has some lovely historical building and is all VERY WALKABLE, particularly from this hotel. The main tourist info office is opposite the old school. Approx 6 minutes on the train (Y200 each way) is TOMITA where there are wonderful gardens and the Kurita Museum, for those interested in porcelain. Approx 20 minutes on the train in the opposite direction is the town of KIRYU, worth a visit just for the bakery! Breakfast is included in the price, as with all Toyoko Inns.

Nice business hotel for a night

This is not a first time fir me to stay in Toyoko inn and i stayed many times in Toyoko inn in various locations in Japan. This one is very close to ashikaga station Friday m north exit. You can even view the blue signs from the station. Reached late night and no other hotel was available that day on Ryomo sen. Found room available in toyoko inn. Room was moderate as per Japanese standard business hotel. It was neat and clean and checked un within a minute. Bought food friends from 7-11 which not even a minute away from this hotel. Took hot bath and relaxed. Problem was no pajamas in the room which was strange. Internet was available but did not find any LAN cable to connect. Always carry own wifi USB so used the same for checking mails. Though hotel is next to station it was calm at night and not noisy at all. Breakfast was typical cheap business class type having rice balls, meat and Miso soup with some pork niimono and coffee. Leo palace is good option for a night with just over 5000 yen cost.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Good++ Excellent location directly in front of the Ashikaga JR Station. This is a rather new facility and our room was super clean We paid only $52 for an economy double and this included breakfast. Easy walking distance to the two main tourist sites in Ashikaga, Banna-ji Temple and Ashikaga Gakko. Parking is available for a fee, free wi-fi, and two free laptops in the lobby Bad-- The economy double is easily the smallest hotel room I have ever been in. Amenities are a tooth brush (2) and tooth paste. Ask at the front desk for a razor if you want one. Ugly ** Night robes (nemaki) are down in the lobby in a rack, not in the room. Breakfast is buffet style, certainly edible enough but not high cusine by any means. In short good for the price, but the Ritz it is not.
