  Great hotel for the price

  Stayed ten nights in total - this was the first hotel I stayed in on a recent trip to Japan - I was expecting a tiny room, but even selecting the smallest single it was easily big enough for 2 people and the space under the beds is a big help for stowing luggage. Location is great - 5 minutes walk to Shin-Yokohama and if you walk 5 minutes the other way there are some lovely paths that run alongside the river. Limited eating opportunities in the vicinity (a few restaurants on the road behind but not much variation in prices and nothing really cheap except Sukiya - Sukiya is amazing for cheap healthy food) and no supermarket - but plenty of convenience stores (Lawson, 7-11 etc). Rooms are spotless, quiet and the A/C is individually controlled (always better than centrally controlled systems) and unlike some Japanese hotels you can open the windows completely if you fiddle with the catch - call me paranoid, but I like to be able to do this in case there was a fire or earthquake and the window was the only exit route. Breakfast is basic but adequate (rice balls, pasta in a mayonnaise sauce, pickled vegetables, miso soup, scrambled eggs, rolls, coffee) and the staff throughout are friendly and competent. Vending and washing/drying machines in the foyer are useful and there are 2 PC's with free internet access in the foyer. Cant remember the last time anyone here in the UK offered free internet access! Overall a very relaxing place to stay.

  Comfy and convenient, skip the breakfast

  These Toyoko Inns are fairly standard across the country. Clean, comfortable, well-wquipped, small rooms. Efficient helpful staff. Lobby packed with extra services and facilities. Overpriced restaurant, free breakfast. I chose this one because it was very close to Shin Yokohama Station, on the bullet train. From the station to the hotel is a 5-minute walk through a super-urban area, all concrete and overpasses. Beyond the hotel, though, is an entertainment area of restaurants and bars. A convenience store on every corner. No problems with the hotel. Slept well in a cool room with a comfortable bed and full bathroom facilities. No noisy neighbours or intrusive staff. Room services daily to the usual high Japanese standard. One thing, though: I woud skip the free breakfast. There was food (and drink) but it looked and tasted most unappetising. You know her your Mom always said breakfast would set you up for the day? Well, this one probably wouldn;t. Very reasonable price.

  Room Small and basic

  The room is tinny. The bathroom is very odd (think as a boat bathroom). The breakfast was not good (i ate only one time even though it was included). It is inexpensive. The checkout is 10 am so they charged the equivalent of 10 extra dollars for each hour I stayed. Not the typical Japanese elegance
