Wonderful mini breakWe stayed at The white swan as a family of 3 and Doug the springer puppy. Anna recommended the pump track at Sutton Bank which our 9 year old loved so thanks for the tip ! Our room was fabulous and Doug loved the treats waiting for him in the room, the hotel was really dog friendly. We thoroughly enjoyed dinner, the staff were attentive and really friendly to our son taking time to talk to him. Gorgeous breakfast in the morning which kept us going to explore more. Five star recommendation for The White Swan. Thank you for a great stay.

Outstanding food at breakfast and dinnerWe stayed for three nights with a dinner, bed and breakfast deal. The food here is excellent and the kitchen is obviously working at a very high level. Highlights were: 1. The breakfast, for which there is a wide choice. One morning we ate the full English which kept us going all day. It includes outstanding bacon, sausage and black pudding produced by the hotel kitchen. On other days we tried: eggs benedict, kippers, kedgeree and smoked salmon and scrambled egg - all were excellent. 2. Meat and fish choices at dinner. One evening I had the grilled whole sea bream with aioli, rosemary potatoes and kale. This is quite a simple dish, but simple dishes are often the ones that are most difficult to get right: this was one of the best dinners I've ever eaten. During our visit we also ate steak and lamb and they were outstandingly good. The kitchen clearly makes it a priority to source top-quality supplies. The service was friendly, but not quite at the level you might expect for a place aiming at very high quality. Many of the staff are very young and appear to be somewhat undertrained. For example, on our first night a very young woman served our wine and managed to drip quite a bit of it on the table. Of course, this can happen and I wouldn't normally complain about it, but a more experienced server would have at least mopped up the spillage. Service is enthusiastic and friendly but could be better. We stayed three nights at the hotel, and saw the manager only once, as he was leaving. We wondered whether staff management and training needs improvement. In other top-quality restaurants where we have been impressed by the service we have noticed a much greater level of day-to-day management involvement. The dining room is rather dark, and unless you sit directly below one of the inset ceiling lights your dinner will not be well-illuminated. We stayed in a Hideway room - one of several in a converted stable block at the back of the main building. It looks like no expense has been spared in the conversion. There is under-floor heating, a good-sized and comfortable bed and high-quality bedding. In our room we had a chaise longue which looked really impressive (although I have to say it wasn't particularly comfortable). The bathroom is also sizeable, but a curious feature is that the shower enclosure is rather small and cramped. Also, there seem to have been problems with cleaning it thoroughly as the grout is discoloured and mouldy looking. After two nights stay nobody had been in to tidy the room, empty the wastebin and check on supplies, which I found to be a curious omission. But then we found a basket outside the door with more towels, bottled water and loo roll so the idea seems to be that guests will help themselves to whatever they need. Overall, this was a very good experience. There were some niggling problems that stopped this being a completely outstanding stay. But the work of the kitchen really does deserve the description 'outstanding'.

Good old InnThe location in Pickering Town centre is a big plus. Plenty of lively shops, cafes, restaurants within 10 min walk. Car parking out back. Staff very well trained. Friendly. Efficient. Room was fine all be it a tad old style for us. Needs a touch of restyling bring it into the 2020's. Food was as expected - big portions, pub style of cuisine . Nothing terribly inventive. Solid, stable. All round an honest establishment . Just needs taking up one notch.

Superb service covid safeAbsolutely beautiful meal with my mum husband and son on Monday night. Service was perfection. We felt very safe as far as COVID. Tables were well separated. Think a little background music just something may have lifted the atmosphere a little. The steak night deal was excellent steaks cooked perfectly my son had the bangers and mash the sausages were great quality and presented beautifully. I have the aubergine and lentil dish. I did enjoy it but Im not sure Id order it again as the lentils tasted a little soapy. The texture was lively loved the crispy onion bits on top. Definitely be back again. Never had a reason to complain here. Keep it up guys tough times for hospitality and you are doing great xxxx Merry Christmas
