A welcoming 17th century pub 15 miles from Southampton

Disappointed with our previously chosen pre-cruise hotels in Southampton, we selected a village pub with good reviews. We were well pleased with The White Lion. The licensee emailed us in advance to warn us that Soberton Church Fete would be held on our arrival date in the field adjacent to the pub so parking might be difficult. On his advice we parked on Cutts Arch adjacent to the pub without any difficulty. Although the pub was understandably very busy we were welcomed and shown to our rooms. The rooms are in a converted stables and coach house block across the yard. Ours had a king size bed on the first floor with bath and sitting rooms below. They were tastefully decorated and spotlessly clean. The pub has Cask Marque accreditation, so beers and indeed all drinks were in excellent form and well presented. Dinner in the restaurant was of equal quality and portions were generous. Next time we shall skip the starters and go straight to the mains! After a good nights sleep we enjoyed an excellent (and inclusive) breakfast. We had planned to buy a snack lunch. Instead we were offered and accepted free baguettes which had been prepared for the Fete and cling-filmed and stored in a fridge overnight - a pleasant surprise and easy to accept given the pubs five star hygiene rating. We shall certainly stay at The White Lion again.

    Very Nice Pub and Rooms

OK, it is a long detour from the South Downs Way (5 miles) but very much worth it, and, to be fair, the landlord offered to run us back to Exton the next morning to pick up the route. This was very kind but we declined as we wanted to walk. The White Lion is a very short walk from the Meon Valley disused railway walk and, I believe, on the Wayfarers way. The food was excellent, the beer very well kept and our rooms clean and well appointed: USB charging sockets as well as plugs, tea and coffee facilities, a good sized bathroom with hot shower, free wifi and a comfortable bed. It's a very quiet village so we had a good nights sleep. I'd almost certainly plan another walk just so I could stay at the White Lion.

    Fabulous after lockdown lunch

My first trip out after lockdown other than a trip to the village shop. The White Lion have put customer and staff safety as a priority. Food and drinks are ordered and paid for via their website so no need whatsoever to go inside. Garden has plenty of tables and parasols. There is even a one way system in the garden. Table with hand sanitiser when you arrive. Food is served in cardboard boxes with bamboo cutlery and plastic glasses. Food was delicious and plentiful. The White Lion is to be congratulated.

    Excellent

Great staff, great room very clean, great food and beautiful area. Value for money excellent. Already booked for next month. Would recommend for both business or pleasure. Wifi took a little while to connect with but a minor point.

    Embarrassing lunchtime

Took my sister for a lunchtime snack; hadn't seen her in ages so recommended The White Lion as I'd had a nice meal there a couple of years ago). She opted for the soup of the day which was pea and ham, and I asked for a bowl of chips. The beer (Goodens Gold) and wine were expensive but fine. The food, however, was poor. My sister was polite whilst eating very thin green soup with a few lumps of bacon floating in it. My chips turned up in a pretentious miniature frying basket and, although dark brown, were soggy and limp. Heaven only knows how chef messed up two dishes which are basically the simplest to make!
