  I wrote this review to inform other skiers regarding skiing in China. Our family of four (kids age 11, 13) went there for skiing in 12 Dec 2016. We usually skied in Hokkaido. The trepidation of skiing in a relatively unknown location was proved irrelevant. Only my daughter has a limited knowledge of Mandarin. Naturally communication was slightly difficult but the staff quickly found those who could converse in English to help us. The service was very good as mentioned below. We had a missing bag and none of us could communicate with the airline to sort this out. The Westin reception took over and sorted it all out. They actually sent someone to collect the bag in Changbaishan airport. What a relieve! The staff managed to fix my son's broken glasses immediately. Sorted out the skiing equipment in the next door Sheraton Hotel. As parents would know, skiing can sometimes be unpleasant due to the various equipments needed. And none of the staff at the ski centre spoke English when we reached there. No worries, Westin actually sent someone to communicate with the skiing department and helped us to get the all the kits and tags ready. Skiing is for intermediate skiers. The piste is well groomed. No off piste skiing allowed. Snow is adequate. Equipment is fine. Everyone must wear helmet, which is provided. Queue is non existence. One morning, I actually counted less than 10 persons skied down the F ski lift blue run in 30 minutes. The only problem is ski school - very limited English speaking instructors. My kids went for only one lesson. But the magic carpet is very good (many carpets, very long, excellent for beginners). There was no wind but temperature was consistently below 10 Celsius. The fear of the locals jumping queue is unfounded. We are not allowed to keep the equipment and had to return all of them to the centre at the end of the day. The whole process needed to be repeated the next day but it was very efficient. Westin is not actually ski in ski out but the ski centre is around 100m away. At the end of the day, just leave the equipment behind and walk back to room. But if the "black run" is opened, you might be able to ski to the door step. For lunch during skiing, just go to many restaurants (Chinese or fast food western KFC, pizza, McD) nearby. Food (Sheraton and Westin have merged, so both hotels facilities could be used) Very good breakfast. We had dinners in Feast, Taste, Chinese restaurant. No problems at all. Menu is in English, so I did not use Google translate. Room - 3006. Excellent room with living room and 2 bedrooms for the kids. With a small kitchen. A basket of fruit on arrival. Very clean with no complains. Facilities - swimming pool and gym are good. Did not try the spa. Transport - excellent, someone waiting to pick us up and sent us off. In summary: The Changbaishan ski resort is very good for intermediate and beginners. There is no queue, skiing centre very well set up. However very limited English speaking instructors. It is nowhere near as bad as the general perception. No hesitation in recommending non Mandarin speaking visitors to the Westin. And it is very good value when compared to Hokkaido.

  Fantastic place to come for business and relaxation

  It is great to know that the Westin brand is of high quality no matter where you go in the world. The Resort in Changbaishan is no different. Our company came here for a quarterly meeting and were very impressed. From the high quality food, to the lovely rooms, and impeccable service, we were very happy. I look forward to coming here again, next time for ski season.

  A good hotel...

  I spent here 4 nights. The hotel has a good location in a parc together with the Sheraton. Nice, clean guest rooms and conference area (in the Sheraton). Very good food, and friendly staff. However, due to some issues with the warm water pipe we had two days(!) no warm water.

  Summer relaxation

  First time to changbaishan. Wanda conglomerate built this large resort area including 2 holiday inns, 2 hyatts, sheraton and this westin. Like the others, westin is large and purpose built for the crowded winter ski season Facilities and quality ho hum like most of china. My balcony door lock is rickety Restaurants mostly buffet style and average 2 hours from heavenly lake

  Family hotel at premium price

  This was our first visit to Changbaishan. As others have noted, the Westin sits within the Wanda resort, but is not directly accessible to the gondola. You need to take a very short shuttle ride to access skiing and the shuttle does not seem designed at all for people transporting skis (narrow seats, no ski rack, step steps). We had our own equipment, but my understanding is that the room rate in winter also includes ski rental, which is in the basement level (and quite far from the shuttle). And dont forget to register your ski pass EVERY day at the Westin or it will not work at the Gondola. We were in a suite and the room itself was very spacious and comfortable. We paid extra for a club level room, however the club was closed due to COVID. Instead, they offered a happy hour from 6 to 8 (basically during dinner) in the lobby. I would not recommend selecting that type of room, as the food and wine were not of a high quality and the happy hour was for a very limited time. The breakfast buffet seemed quite large and had a variety of western and Chinese options. We had dinner at both restaurants and would recommend skipping them and trying the places in town. The service will need to improve to meet global Westin standards. As an example, two days before we checked in, we received a notice saying that our room would be given up if we did not confirm it. Given my Marriott Gold status, I found this quite disappointing and rather stressful, since we were already in Changbaishan and counting on the room at a very busy period. After several calls and emails, things were straightened out, but not a great experience. Overall, I just found the value, and especially the location and service, to not be there for the price.
