    Oh Dear!

We came to Hunstanton for a two night stay at the Wash & Tope. First impressions were good. Nice bar, helpful staff, some good real ales to choose from. We heard the rooms were a bit dated and wasnt really put off by that. The room was a nice size and seemed pretty clean. We check ourselves in, have a drink at the bar and then go out for the night. Sadly, from that point on, not so good. Get back to the hotel, decide to watch a bit of TV. They have Freeview so great! Wait a minute, theres no BBC channels! So read a book instead? Good, except one of the table lamps didnt work and the main ceiling light would put the floodlights at Carrow road to shame! The windows did not close properly and one of the windows had a 1-2cm gap around the seal which let a huge draft through. During the night, the main radiators went off and we had to fish out another oil radiator from beside the wardrobe. We couldnt get a good night sleep as the radiator barely compensated for the huge draft. At 8.30am the main radiator had not turned on and the water was only luke warm after running it for a good 5 minutes. Had to use the kettle to shave. Also, the lead for kettle was short so it had to be perched close to the edge of the cupboard and it nearly ended up on the floor because of this. I went down to complain straightaway but there were no front of house staff available to complain to. I managed to catch the chef who was very apologetic and took down our details, including mobile number, to pass on but I was told there wouldnt be anybody else about until about 11am so out we went out for breakfast and another stroll. We did manage to speak to a couple of staff again who were apologetic and we were given the option to change to another room but the bathroom had a dodgy window too so we declined. Unfortunately the manager didnt turn up but we were refunded for the night we didnt stay, and given £20 compensation for the inconvenience. I felt rather sorry for the staff actually because quite simply, the room should never have been let out in that condition. If the management were to fix the windows and sort out the basics it wouldnt be a bad hotel. Nb. We didnt try the food so cant comment on that other than there were good value options nearby.

    Warm welcome and cold showers

I had been a bit concerned that the hotel didnt show a photo of the room when I booked, but it was a good price for a room with a sea view. I was initially a little disappointed that the hotel was set back from the beach with a large car park in between. We went on a cold, rainy day and got to the hotel around 2.30. We told the man at the bar that we would have a drink whilst wait ing for check in time. He said that the room was ready so we could go straight up. We were very pleased with the room, and the lack of photos was not because of any deficiency. It was a good size, with a decent sized shower room, and a huge window overlooking the sea. We were high enough for the car park to be out of view. The room was a little cold and I couldnt get the main radiator to work at first, but there was an electric radiator in the room which soon warmed us up, and the normal heating did come on later. There was no hot water. It was vaguely warm, and after a couple of hours my husband went to the bar and overheard that someone was on way to sort it out. It must have worked as there was hot water when we returned from our evening out, although that was too late to be useful to us. Having missed out on a shower the previous evening I was keen to have one when I got up. I tried at 6.50am and the water was freezing, I kept trying but by 7.50 I gave up and left for home. There was no one that I could find to tell, and I just left my keys in the letter box specified. The young man working the bar and waiting on tables the previous day appeared to be the only member of staff serving, and he was run off his feet to the extent that after waiting close to 15 minutes to get a drink we left to go elsewhere. This hotel has great potential and if the issues with hot water and lack of staff could be sorted out it would be a great place to stay.

    Sea life weekend

Had a lovely time, Pub/ B&B is in a ideal place, right by the sea & next to amenities. Staff were lovely, very friendly & helpful as was a bit stressed as could not find anywhere to park, they kindly came outside & stood in a spot so I could park. Room was lovely & warm, sea view. Ideal spot.

    Lovely hotel

Lovely location , staff are very friendly, caring and very hard working too . Lovely rooms , we stayed in room 3 , we had a beautiful view over the sea and beach . Plenty of room for our 2 dogs too , brilliant location , especially as we are keen dog walkers , we walked to Heacham one day , then old Hunstanton the next day . Food was lovely , and honestly the staff were just brilliant. We will return next year. Kim + paul x
