  Great for the Forest

  The positives. Well placed for the Forest either walking or cycling. The staff in the restaurant were helpful throughout and the food was excellent. Nice dog blanket and bowl provided, The negatives. Not sure why at the restaurant you had to ask reception for a key to use the toilet. We had a courtyard room - sounds grand but the courtyard is the carpark! Be careful stepping out of the door. A dog friendly room, with a very disappointing bathroom that was in desperate need of a refurb. The covid issues were patchy - twice we informed reception (two hours apart) that the hand sanitiser at the back door was empty. In reception in the evening we saw people arriving for dinner sit then go into dinner without any attention given to sanitising the furniture. Our room was not serviced for the four days of the stay - had to ask at reception for towels/toilet rolls. The dog waste bin at the gate into the field was not emptied -given the lack of room servicing I guess that people were using it for the rubbish from rooms. None of that great when we are all so concerned about hygienic. In summary disappointing - didnt live up to expectations.

  Excellent stay. Ideal location and superb food

  Stayed here for two nights on a Travelzoo voucher. Contrary to a previous review concerning guests using vouchers, we were treated with friendly professionalism throughout our stay. The hotel is in a fantastic location in the heart of the Forest of Dean. Ideal for walking and/or mountain biking. Had two lovely long walks direct from the hotel, so didn't use our car for the entire trip. The Speech House is steeped in a very interesting history which is well worth reading. We stayed in a standard room (3) in the main part of the building. The room and bathroom was very large, but suffered slightly with the age of that part of the hotel - shower curtain rather than screen, a noticeable lack of sockets (none by the beds), and on occasion a little noisy from the adjacent road. Nothing major that impacted our enjoyment. The food was absolutely superb. Breakfasts were large and of very good quality. We ate in the Verderers fine dining restaurant both nights and the food was beautifully present and delicious - we couldn't find fault. Good choice of wines, and reasonably priced for the quality. All the staff were very friendly and helpful. Particular mention for Charlotte who served us the first evening and at both breakfasts. The staff on the Saturday night appeared a little less experienced, but I'm sure that will come. We had a lovely break, and felt the hotel had done really well with all their procedures during an incredibly challenging time, especially for hospitality. Plenty of hand gel around, and we watched quite carefully between sittings in the restaurant and everything from chairs, tables, mats, cruet sets etc was thoroughly wiped down. It is a little odd in these times that you can't sit and get a just a coffee or a drink in the lounge, so more time was spent in our room than we normally would do, but it was reassuring that the hotel was following the government guidance correctly. Well worth a visit and we will definitely return.

  Amazing food in COVID safe garden dens and beautiful woodlands scenery

  Our visit to The Speech House (dating back to 1669) was a fantastic experience. The hotels location, set in the centre of the Royal Forest of Dean, is simply unique. The restaurant dining experience at the Verderers was exceptional, the food is simply amazing and the service was great. Travelling and relaxing is very difficult during the COVID-19 pandemic. The team at The Speech House managed to make everything feel normal while ensuring everyone adhered to strict COVID safety measures. They have gone above and beyond by setting up garden dens to allow for outdoor dining. The area is one of the only surviving ancient woodlands in England, our walks were such a joy. It did look like the mountain bikers were having a fantastic time too! We are definitely planning to go back. Knowing Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philipp planted two oak trees just outside the building makes it feel extra special.

  Fabulous weekend at the unique Speech House Hotel

  We had a fantastic weekend in an amazing and unique hotel at The Speech House Hotel in the Forest of Dean. The building is historic and unique and the service the entire weekend was warm, friendly and professional. they had everything covered for covid and the dinner out in the garden in the den was so much fun. Food was truly delicious and the walks so refreshing. Definitely going back again.

  Wonderful weekend in a magical place

  The Speech House is a wonderful place to spend a long weekend and the management and staff have done an incredible job of making it Covid safe. We spent three nights there and used all three of the available dining options during the stay. On the night that we arrived, which was our wedding anniversary, we treated ourselves to dinner in one of the garden "dens" which was absolutely delightful and the service from the team looking after us was exceptional. Dinner on night two was in the Verderes restaurant which oozes history and on the final evening we chilled in the Orangery and enjoyed a less formal dinner. The food on each occasion was absolutely wonderful with some incredible flavours and a great selection of wines to choose from too. The bedroom was roomy with a super comfy bed and lovely views out across the forest which surrounds the hotel. The Forest of Dean itself is beautiful and its literally on the doorstep. Walking through it on a winters morning like we had, was very special and if you like your photography its a dreamland. Throughout the stay the team at the Speech House were top drawer and they clearly all take pride in being part of such a wonderful place..we can highly recommend it as a place to stay and we'll definitely be back
