  Dishonest management, disappointing stay

  We booked a room here as we were attending a music festival in the area. The manager took our credit card for a refundable deposit but a week later we noticed that the deposit had actually been taken out of our credit card. It took 4 phone calls before they finally agreed to refund; one told me the deposit was definitely on it's way back. 3 days later, still no deposit. Other 2 phone calls were staff saying they didn't know what had happened. On the final phone call, they agreed to refund the money in 3 business days. This is the first time in my travelling history where I have encountered this with a hotel. I think they just assume that guests wouldn't check their credit card statements or would think they somehow spent that amount at the pub and wouldn';t question the transaction. Be careful if you're staying here and check your credit card afterwards.

  The plough hotel

  Noisy, on a main road. They washed the carpets the day before I left and didnt tell me. The carpet was wet and I went for a big slide. Not very safe !!! Proximity to what I needed was good though. Restaurant food was good. No in house service though and no lift to assist with baggage.

  Great location, but not very clean or well-maintained; overpriced

  Stayed in a deluxe king (room 11), which wasn't as nice and shiny as the photos on reservation sites, etc. I've uploaded some photos of the room we had. On the way in, one will notice the musty old carpets leading to the rooms. Once in the room, we could see and feel an overall bit of dust/grime about. The room was also missing fire alarm (see photo). The shower did not supply consistent hot water; waves of purely cold water would come and go every few seconds, so we needed to hurry through our showers. At least the bed sheets and towels seemed clean. The room rate was way too high for the quality of the room and experience. Excellent location, though.

  A Melbourne landmark

  The Plough is one of the oldest functioning hotels in Melbourne. The Plough dates from 1868 and was rebuilt in its current form in 1910. It is built in Edwardian Freestyle, with Arts and Crafts highlights. Since its revival, it has been "leading house in the city with a very large country trade." Like Footscray, the Plough went through a "rough trot" but it is now back at the top of its game. The Plough's "growlers" -- two lire take away jugs of beer -- are very popular. The Plough is easy to find, at the corner of Victoria St and Barkely St, off Princes Highway.

  Rooms are good value

  The Plough is one of the best-known pubs in Melbourne, it's in the heart of Footscray. You can get a good cold beer, or a meal. The rooms are clean and neat, and very good value. The Plough is only minutes frrom the city.
