Overpriced, Tepid Water, Wifi Not Working

Although we tried to make the best of our stay - for the high price charged (£160 bed and breakfast) - we expected better. The water from the loch is brown and tepid and we were advised not to take a bath. Although the owner said wifi was working in the main bar area we had to give up trying it as it crashed out when trying to send work deadlines and we ended up using our own 4g on our phones. The owner seemed very stressed and tired (there were no staff outside the two owners) The evening meal was overpriced - the best part was the whisky cheesecake. Disappointing overall compared to previous hotel experiences in Scotland and value for money - unfortunately we didnt feel we could express this while at the premises due to the fact the owner has had enough and clearly does not want to be there. The breakfast was not relaxing - it was not Covid distanced even when there were 5 tables in the breakfast room. The overall experience was not relaxing

Overpriced for older musty property, overcooked food

I'll preface that the hospitality sector is facing a lot of strain, so it's possible this review just represents current circumstances that would improve post COVID. We would not recommend. Our room has a musty smell, the wifi was so slow we were better off with cellular and tap water was not drinkable. The owner seemed very grumpy. He warmed up to us over the stay but it generally felt like he would just rather not be operating. Dinner was not good. My burger was 1 step over well-done and my partner's dish felt like heated Tesco pre-made meals. Breakfast was better. I have noted other reviews complaining about this property not being open before 4:30pm. That is made incredibly clear during the reservation process and it is well signed outside the property, so that feels unfair.

    Brilliant place

What a place . Kev the owner is so funny . His bark is worse than his bite . The food was wonderful cooked by the mythical Karen . The whisky cheesecake is the best I've ever tasted . The breakfast in the breakfast room was better than average . All in all a great find .. book room 3 of you can it's worth that bit extra

Among the last of the great highland fishing hotels.

This is a great hotel for people who have a purpose for staying. There are some reviews from visitors that were perhaps expecting more of a remote highland fishing hotel. We stayed 4 nights and had 3 days trout fishing. Our room was spotless. We had the fishing shed to ourselves, complete with freezer for our trout. The drying space heater didn't seem to work but regardless our clothes were dry each morning. The fishing was good, thanks to tips on where to go from Kevin (also an avid angler) Given the strain of having to work with corona virus restrictions, both Kevin and Karen were great hosts. The bar was well stocked and reasonably priced. The bar meals were tasty and substantial. The breakfasts were so good and substantial that we could have missed out on the packed lunches provided. Lots of unexpected humour and anecdotes from Kevin....brilliant. Traditional highland fishing hotels are now a rarity and with my 40 years experience,I'd give this place 4 stars. If you are a true outdoor person, looking for a base, then The Overscaig is for you.If you are looking for something else, then do some research. Hope to get back there next year.

    Blissful escape to the country

Quaint room, with excellent internet speeds, that was clean and comfortable. We enjoyed breakfast and dinners at the hotel, both of which were tasty and bountiful - we never left the table remotely hungry - in fact between brekkie and dinner there was no requirement for lunch! The location was ideal for stunning walks and views. COVID rules were strictly laid out at the start of the stay and adhered to. Play by the rules and you'll have a welcoming stay. Hosts are a fab to team of down-to-earth people, hearty chefs and banterous character. Thank you Kevin and Karen (and Lee and Steven) for the uplifting getaway :) Rebecca and Laura (Scot and honorary Scot)
