    Not impressed

Just back from a 2 night stay and have to say not impressed, booked directly with the hotel a few weeks ago as we had been bought a buyagift voucher as a present and as it said luxury we thought lovely lets book. On arrival we were sent to room 6 in the courtyard and as soon as we opened the door we could smell dog, the sofa in the room was really smelly I rang reception to be told that yes they had dogs in the rooms! We were not told this on booking if we had been I would not have booked and they said that they could not move us to another room. We had an evening meal later and again I mentioned our disappointment that we do not have dogs and do not like having to sleep in a room that smells of dog to be told well you did get the room cheap as its buyagift voucher, how awful to be bought a gift and feel you have to accept inferior rooms, disgusting, will not return.

    Fantastic lunch and friendly service

Had lunch outside with friends in September . Great service, extensive menu and excellent food . I shared a fish platter with my husband and it exceeded expectations ; lobster, sardines , giant prawns, whitebait, smoked salmon and more .

    Shocking Customer Relations

I had visited the Orange Tree before, but only for bar food in the garden in summertime. On this occasion, I wanted to stay in order to host friends (who live in Thornham) to dinner. My partner has terminal cancer, and this would be one of a series of short trips away from home. Although the dining room service was poor, the food and wine were excellent. Shortly after waking the following morning, there was a power cut. The shower was powered by electricity, so we were unable to make use of it. We washed, and headed to Reception to pay an outstanding bill. The ever-present and charming manageress confirmed our suspicion that breakfast would not be available until the power was back on. A man who I assume was the owner then appeared, and kindly asked if there was anything he could do for us. We suggested compensation, and he asked how much. My partner suggested £50. He readily agreed and authorised the manageress the rebate. We left to clear our room and pack the car. I returned to Reception to drop the room key, at which point the power came back. I was met by a euphoric "owner" who told me the £50 rebate was off because (since the power was back) we could now have our shower and our breakfast. Because we had to get away, I did not accept his suggestion. He seemed fired up at the prospect of not having to pay compensation (to anyone) after all. He then verbally abused my partner to my face, squared up to me (no social distancing), and told me to "f...k off and never sully my doorstep again", all in front of his staff members. Suffice to say that he had no need to say that, because we certainly won't be back. We did nothing wrong. Power cuts happen. But this one could not have happened at a worse time for us. His concern for profit seemed to override any responsibility for his guests. PS We have yet to receive the agreed refund. He was completely out of order, and spoilt what could have been a perfectly acceptable experience. We will never be back.

    Comforable hotel

We took the chance of a few days away before the lockdown and were pleased with our choice of the Orange Tree for two nights. Our room was in the converted Old Bakery just around the corner from the main building so involved a short walk to get to the restaurant. The room was nicely furnished, with a very comfortable bed and a very modern (but also very compact) bathroom - we enjoyed the rain shower. On our second morning there was a 30 minute power cut, but the shower still worked although the lights didnt. We could hear voices from the room below a bit too clearly, but fortunately this stopped before we were thinking of going to bed. There is a nice lounge with sofas on the ground floor of the Old Bakery, which we used a couple of times. Breakfast was excellent with a choice of eggs florentine, eggs benedict etc., as well as the usual full English breakfast, and particularly good toast. Service was friendly and prompt. This is a part of the country we dont know very well so we may return.

    Exceptional Customer Service

We were so impressed with the customer service at this establishment, from the telephone booking to the arrival, stay and departure. Nothing was too much trouble. Located in a very quiet, picturesque village close to Hunstanton (well worth a visit - very traditional, well kept town on the Norfolk coast) and the famous RSPB Titchwell and Snettisham reserves. The welcome arrival was good, with an upgrade to a room in the new building. Good sized room with everything you need for a 2 night stay. Very good Covid regulations throughout our stay. We had the fish and chips on the first evening, mine without batter, which was absolutely no trouble to provide on request. I finished with the cheese board, which was very plentiful. Good wine selection. The 2nd evening was a Sunday and they change their menu to accommodate the Sunday roast lunches so the Signature dish I was looking forward to wasn't on the menu. However, the chef agreed to cook it for me - again great customer service. Excellent food and service. The deserts we had on the 2nd evening were works of art and delicious. I would definitely recommend this pub/hotel/restaurant - one of the best we have stayed at, and we often stay in Sawdays special places. I think this deserves to be one.
