Pleasant and relaxingWeve driven past this hotel many times over the years, thanks to a friend we has the opportunity to stay for a night. On entering the hotel we where greeted by friendly member of staff. My wife and I where well looked after on arrival and shown where all the facilities where. Due to COVID-19 breakfast is currently limited, our order was taken on arrival with time we would like it in the morning. First impressions of the room was very spacious and clean, the mattress felt soft compared to what we are used to and we where concerned that we might not sleep well but I must say it was probably the best night sleep we have had in years staying at hotels, there is good size bathroom with large jacuzzi bath. The amazing thing about the room is the views across the moors back down towards Plymouth and the sound. The bar is small but well stocked and again the staff where very helpful and friendly. The menu was brought to us while we had our drinks before going through to the restaurant. The restaurant was clean and well spaced out for COVID restrictions. Order was taken quickly and politely and we where well looked after, food came at a reasonable time for freshly cooked food, both mains where Cooked and seasoned well, it was a pleasant and enjoyable main course. They offer a good selection of deserts and cheese. To my surprise the hotel have a separate cheese menu where you can pick which cheese you would like, this is nice to see instead of the normal blue, Brie and cheddar selection. You get at the majority of places. My wife ordered bread and butter pudding with clotted cream, when desert came out it had the baileys custard on it and not the clotted cream as she asked for, this was not an issue though not what my wife asked for, my wife though really enjoyed the custard with it, once we where back in the room we had a phone call from the bar apologising for the error with desert, it was really nice to see that as a hotel the staff had noticed there error and apologised, again the staff where very polite and helpful. Overall it was a really pleasant and enjoyable stay with friendly and helpful staff and would definitely recommend and stay again myself.

Good position, pleasant staff, comfortable roomThe hotel is welcoming, staff are friendly and the hotel seems to have some redecoration. We travelled here during the pandemic so expected some restrictions but the hotel is managing these quite well - no worries there although we weren't keen on the grab and go breakfast bap and felt that there must be some way of providing a proper breakfast experience. We had dinner in the restaurant twice and found thought the food OK. Both my steak and my gammon steak were slightly below par - perhaps the chef should talk to his butcher as the cuts weren't up to standard (my wife and I live in a similar countryside location and we know that local produce can be better). Having said that, though, my wife was happy with her food. Staff also 'lost' our reservation for our second evening. Our room was nicely furnished although the desk lamp didn't workwork, the bathroom was clean and functional and the view was great. All rooms in the main house have good views. All in all, we enjoyed our stay but feel that a bit more attention to detail is needed. Would we stay here again? Probably.

Fantastic meal feeling safeWow... a fantastic meal, beautifully cooked and presented. Staff all helpful, happy and friendly. We felt so safe in these current covid times, everything and more was in place to keep everyone safe and hats off to the way it is all organised. We will be back and would well recommend a visit.

Weekend stay in SeptemberExcert from a letter written to Steve Furness after our stay - to which we had no reply! We stayed in room 111, just about the smallest hotel room we've ever been in. Whilst it had the basics it left a lot to be desired dirty marks on the net curtains, dirty marks on the walls in the room and en suite, paint runs on the wall next to the bed, couldn't open and exit the ensuite without stepping back and squeezing past the sink, the bathroom radiator was not working and a thick layer of dust on back of wardrobe when moved in order to access the radiator switch! The bed was comfortable however and we had a good nights sleep except for being woken one morning by a barking dog sounded like it was coming from an adjacent room! On arrival we checked with reception as to the menu re our 'deal' and were told we could have anything up to the value of £35. Later we were told it was £25 with a £5 supplement for steak! Food (we ate in the conservatory a lovely room but tables too close together) for two days running our breakfasts were only lukewarm and the sausage I had on Saturday morning was the most anaemic looking thing ever (see photo) would you eat a sausage like that Steve I certainly couldn't. Latecomers to breakfast were given much larger glasses of juice presumably you'd run out of smaller glasses some people around us were a little annoyed by this and rightly so. On Saturday evening I ordered steak. We waited and waited and asked and asked and eventually, when we were within an inch of walking out it arrived, about 1 hour and 20 minutes later! No steak knives were available. I had asked for a jug of water twice during our steak wait and it didn't arrive, eventually I went to the bar and asked for a jug or caraffe but they had none so I just took two glasses of water back to the table. Eventually we spoke to the duty manager who was very apologetic and offered a complimentary drink! We eventually finished the meal at 10:15! Amazing service', 'fast service', 'amazing food', 'rooms were spotlessly clean' were some of the comments about the Moorland on Trip Advisor. Unfortunately that was not our experience!
