Disappointing service and woeful housekeepingIt pains me to write a poor review for a hotel in country Victoria in the midst of a pandemic when the hospitality industry is suffering unprecedented losses. The dark, handsome and thoughtfully designed spaces are by Hecker & Guthrie, so there is no doubt the hotel is stunning. Great bed, linen and bathroom amenities. Unfortunately, the fairytale ends here. This stay reminded us of why we rarely have local holidays. The price you pay for the appalling level of service has not changed since time immemorial. There are significant issues with the on-site restaurant (Muse), levels of service and housekeeping. Check-in staff at reception were variable, ranging from cheerful and helpful to indifferent. Staff at the restaurant needs way more training before being unleashed to the guests. If I am paying $18-20 for entres and $35+ for mains (ie: Melbourne prices), I expect a certain level of finesse and courtesy with the service which is somewhat lacking here. The experience was almost comical starting with the wrong wines being brought to us after a long wait, and ending with us being completely ignored after mains. We had to wave frantically to get anyones attention to order dessert, at which point we were told Oh, let me check to see if the kitchen is still taking orders. This after having tried unsuccessfully to get someones attention for almost 15 minutes. Frustratingly, no one showed any initiative or drive. We had a better and more pleasant experience on the 2nd night (a different crew was on and there appears to be a manager on the floor). Another issue with the restaurant is its wine list. The list consists of exclusively Mitchelton wines. Whilst not unusual for winery hotels to feature their own wines, they usually (a) have a few other local options (b) do not have a steep 70-100% mark up on its own bottles. Another disappointing aspect of our stay was housekeeping. They returned dirty used coffee mugs and water glasses (complete with lip stains!) back into the pantry cupboard. We had to ring reception to get these replaced. Housekeeping merely did the bed and replaced the towels, they didnt even wash and wipe down the basin, which I consider quite basic hygiene tasks. If they cannot get these simple housekeeping tasks right, I shudder to imagine if any of the increased Covid level cleaning necessary is being undertaken (or merely promotional propaganda to provide false reassurance of cleanliness and safety standards). The spa was functioning at what looks like half service (only massages with masks on, no facials). Again, beautiful spaces here, staff lovely, but quality of treatment was mediocre. I understand getting/retaining good staff in the country might be a challenge, however, they really should consider investing in staff training as this is really letting them down. Our feedback to the hotel (via the only email address available online) has met with stone cold silence after almost a week, perhaps unsurprising given the level of experience we have had.

Three night awayHaving stayed here a year ago we knew what to expect but, wow, on arrival the reception was first class. Friendly smiling staff only towelling to help. The room was spotless and the bottle of wine with the welcome back note made my day. Breakfast what at providorerestaurant and all the staff had smile and were friendly and polite. The service was second to none. We did a wine tasting and the young lady who served us knew her stuff. Great smile and made both my wife and l feel very welcome. We loved the pool as it was 39 degrees when we arrived and the next day was 42 degrees. Had a walk around the vineyard and met the two emu. The wife had a manicure and pedicure and she was very impressed with the friendly staff I was impressed last year when we stayed here but this time l was blown away by the very friendly staff and the great service for all the staff. Every staff member had a smile and said hello. We only had 3 nights but from arriving we felt totally relaxed and very welcomed. A very big thank you to all the people at Mitchelton winery/hotel

Second StaySorry, to be lazy, but rolling all my reviews into one.... Cellar Door- how lovely and relaxing. A positive about covid...pre book, relaxed, seated tasting. Providore - loved brekkie here. Great service, great coffee and delicious brekkie Hotel - lovely room, appreciated the shiraz welcoming us back, friendly FO, room was clean, loved the pool and a big shout out to Ryan who went that extra mile in getting my husbands hat off the roof (blew off whilst up the tower?) Had 2 big walks around the vineyard, which was special. The Muse - what a beautiful lunch. The bbq lamb, the murray cod, were perfect dishes for Australia Day. The potatoes, so yummy. We also indulged in room service, with the haloumi/figs and sardines. Perfect light evening snack. Once again, thank you for making our second stay special. We will be back.

Relaxing WeekendGreat hotel experience, with terrific pool and lovely surrounds. Really an excellent option only a short drive from Melbourne. Would defintely suggest going to Bank Street Pizza and the Tablik restaurant while there. Only downside was the food wasn't that great

Great hotelWe stayed her mid January (having had to cancel an interstate trip). Hotel seemed at capacity. The strengths were the beautiful architecture, vineyard setting, diligent and genuinely friendly staff members and stylish interiors. I was worried about the Muse restaurant, having read some negative reviews, but thought it was excellent. I would definitely dine there again when we return. The negatives were the size of the room - we had a deluxe room but it felt tiny with the two of us and a small child. A dedicated space to store luggage (a standard feature at a Bali hotel) would have made a huge difference - and just having more space. For the price, the size was a big disappointment. Also, the pool and number of recliners - its just not relaxing having to sit on the grass, or in a less desirable seat with no umbrella, waiting for someone to leave. And due to the scarcity of umbrellas with recliners, people werent budging. Not sure how this can be fixed - but if the area had been designed with a bigger pool and the number of recliners and umbrellas being more reflective of the number of hotel rooms (again more like a Bali resort - sorry!), my relaxation would have been ten-fold. It also would have stopped my husband disappearing back to the hotel room and abandoning me and my daughter because of the glare and lack of comfort. Lastly, unfortunately all are breakfasts at the Providore were terrible - a 70-minute wait for coffees one day, because our order was lost, cold toast, and Bircher muesli that was more like milky porridge. Next time, Ill skip breakfast to bag a poolside recliner, due to the competition- something the other guests already seemed to be onto. So great stay - and will return - but definitely some room for improvement.
