BrilliantWhat an absolutely fantastic place. What you would expect of course but excellent none the less. Wonderful staff, great cocktails, fantastic food. A brilliant hotel in Aberdeen. On the edge of town so away from the hustle and bustle of the centre. Great for business as well.

Could have been perfectWe had booked the complete indulgence break as an anniversary treat for ourselves, in your own words Everything is included, there are no hidden extras! Sounded perfect, and although some parts of our stay were absolutely perfect others were not. Upon check in I asked if our dinner reservation could be made slightly earlier than 8.30 as government restrictions would be coming into force at 10pm and we did not want to rush our meal. The receptionist couldnt find our booking until I named the person I had been emailing earlier in the week and explained I had been surprised I hadnt received a final confirmation. It obviously hadnt been written in the diary. The booking was then found and after some delay our time was rearranged. It just wasnt the slick service expected. The concierge assisted us upstairs with our bags, explaining how short staffed the hotel was at the moment because it wasnt busy enough to justify people being taken back from furlough. Maybe this was an explanation of the standard of our room? It certainly was not fully clean, a bedside tissue box so dusty I could draw a line through it, all 3 pictures hanging squint on the walls and if the bathroom could be classed as 3 star I would be surprised. Paint and plaster flaking off the wall, mirrors all smeared and the hygiene bag holder was filthy, covered in water marks. We had not been 10 minutes in our room and the concierge was back with Champagne, lovely, but actually should have been with our celebration meal at night. While he was there I enquired about the note the receptionist had given us with our payment/checkout details. It stated check out was 11am although a 2pm checkout is part of the indulgence package we booked. He assured me it was an 11am check out so the rooms would be deep cleaned. Another disappointment but we understood. We settled again only for concierge to be back at the door again! Apologising but confirming that it was a 2pm checkout with our deal. It was beginning to feel like Fawlty towers! No more interruptions and we had an absolutely outstanding meal with fabulous service from both bar and restaurant staff, just without the champagne we had expected, meaning we then had to indulge in wine at our added expense. A good nights sleep in a very comfortable bed followed by breakfast in our room, also perfect, lovely and hot and served professionally. Back to bed to enjoy our relaxing Saturday morning only to have housekeeping appear just after 11am! I would expect that if you are advertising and supplying different packages that it wouldnt be too difficult for everyone to know which room number is benefitting from what? So after our last interruption we left early and went home to relax. Things are different at the moment and some justification for letting things slip can be made. But it certainly should not be used as an excuse by staff to guests. We did make our feelings known upon check out, and were told that someone would be in touch, which one week later they have not.

All we hoped it would be.As things stand (14 October 2020) my wife and I (each of us 70-plus) are not allowed to invite anyone into our home, nor can anyone invite us into their home. So, if we are to meet up with anyone else (two maximum) in comfort we need to chose a cafe or a hotel's restaurant or lounge. Not having seen our teenage granddaughter for over a month, we arranged to meet her in the lounge of the Marcliffe Hotel at what, for the hotel, is a comparatively slack time of day ie the period of time that fills the gap between the end of serving lunch and the beginning of serving afternoon tea 'for real'. We booked in advance. We live four miles away from the hotel. So does our granddaughter. We were welcomed warmly and given a choice of places in the lounge area, or could have opted for a table in the restaurant too. An easy choice for us. The old-style sofas and lounge chairs in the lounge area are in a class of their own. So comfortable. So relaxing. We each settled for a 'combo' of "(tea or coffee) plus (scone or shortbread)". The scone is a dearer option than the shortbread. Both are delicious. The service was excellent, and the presentation of our choices was to a standard that had '5 star' written all over it. Each of us had our own generously proportioned tea pot of coffee pot. For relaxing surroundings and high quality food and service when looking to have 'a good chat over a good brew and a fine piece', the Marcliffe is 'the tops'. Our teenage granddaughter loved being there (her first time) and would gladly go back. So would we. We felt we were the beneficaries of a menu choice which represents very good value for money and which fits ideally with what we wished the meeting up to achieve at a time convenient to all three of us. The experience was a real treat and, as such, spiritually uplifting in what are difficult times.

5 star restaurant, hotel is lackingPlease note we are not the type to usually complain, we have never written a bad review or called out a staff member in particular but we were quite shocked by this introduction; My husband and I booked our stay through the October deal for bed, breakfast and dinner. As this was the night after our wedding we wanted a nice 5 star hotel to celebrate. However, it was clear that the hotel facilities and services are not up to the 5 star standard. When we arrived the hotel we had a 10 minute wait to check in because Scott the receptionist chose to answer the phone before serving us. It was clear he stressed and this was shown through his rude responses to the taxi driver who was asking help to find his passenger. I understand during covid there may be reduced staff but there is no excuse for rudeness and I would have thought customers with their bags to check in would have been more important than someone on the phone. Once we eventually were served there was no apology for the delay and it seemed like we were an inconvenience when we asked for directions to the room as this was not provided when given the key. The room itself was fine, nothing special. Bed was two singles pushed together which I would expect in a 3 star hotel, also the bed was quite short. The highlight of our stay was the dinner, the service and food were both fantastic. It is a shame the rest of the hotel does not reflect the same level of quality. Breakfast was also amazing, cannot fault the food or waiters service. At check out the woman at the desk was lovely as well, so it is a shame that the introduction was such a let down.
