  Terrific Property with a great host!

  We only stayed at the Lodge for 2 evenings, but were taken away by the surroundings and the terrific accommodations provided by Kay. She was extremely helpful and such a great hostess. We miss you (and Fred) already! Lake Tarawera is absolutely gorgeous and you could not smell the sulfur from Rotorua and the surrounding geothermal areas, which was a definite bonus. It's a 15-20 minute drive from town, which is the only downside, but it's a beautiful route and well worth being away from the sulfur smell. We'll definitely be going back!

  Great Base

  Kay is a loevely host and this was a perfect base to saty in whilst exploring the Rotorua area - such a relaxing and gracious place to come back to - so relaxing.

  Amazing location- immaculate accomodation

  We loved the Lodge at 199, it is beautifully located and decorated and Kay is a perfect hostess. The rroms and beds are just fabulous, we had the lodge to ourselves and felt at home right away. Her gorgeous dog Freddie is a charmer and loves to be cuddled. With log fires a huge garden and uninterrupted views of the Lake Tarewera (about 20 miles from Roturua), we found peace and calm at this location. A real chillout. Kay cooks a fabulous breakfast and is kind and helpful with dinner arrangements as there is no other food available at the Lodge. We ate locally - anout 4km away and found the food fresh and very reasonable, but could be limiting if you stay longer. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will be back if ever we go that way again

  'Was' Simply Stunning

  As the last ever guests at the 'Lodge at 199', we cannot sing it's praises highly enough, being totally impressed with the accommodation, stunning location and the warmth and friendliness of Kay (and Freddie), our hostess (and dog). Kays attention to detail and guests needs made this a fantastic place to stay and was one of the highlights of our holiday. Whilst this property has been sold, Kay is continuing her business locally in Rotorua - we would highly recommend that you search for Kay Shortland because from our experience you can be guaranteed a wonderful, attentive holiday experience.   Highlight of our Holiday!

  The last review said it all, but we wanted to also add our utmost gratitude for having the opportunity to stay at Lodge 199 in its last month. We travelled around New Zealand for a month, but our stay at Lodge 199 was unmatched due to the incredible hospitality and graciousness of Kay Shortland. Even though the property was stunning and luxurious, it was Kay who truly made this accommodation a 10-star experience!! After only being there three days, we felt that Kay [and Freddie of course!] were family that we were leaving behind. As she continues her business locally in Rotorua, we guarantee if you stay with Kay [at the nearby Black Swan] you will be guaranteed a perfect holiday accommodation. Chris, Judy, Katie
