A Hidden GemThis place is magical! My significant other surprised me by bringing me to the Inn on Thistle Hill after a day of hiking at White Oak Canyon. We got in late, but our hostess, Shauna, greeted us with immense hospitality and charisma, guiding us to our reserved cottage. The Azalea Cottage was private, cozy, and elegantly decorated - very romantic. We felt immediately welcome and at home. Though we discovered good restaurants in nearby Culpeper, our favorite part of the evening was making use of the rustic fireplace and delightfully luxurious sheets. Frank prepared a phenomenal breakfast for us the next morning. In addition to coffee and orange juice, we were treated to homemade yogurt, jam, biscuits, eggs how we liked them, sausage, and hashbrowns... it was all delicious. Both Frank and Shauna were very conversational, and seemed genuinely interested in getting to know us, as well as sharing some of their amazing story. Cell service is spotty at present, but I was able to get decent signal with Virgin/Sprint service when I stepped outside our cottage. If you're looking for a a serene and unique place to escape from the hustle and bustle, consider the Inn on Thistle Hill.

Not what we hoped for, and we found it pretty creepy. We stayed for one night in May because of the proximity to Old Rag Mountain. When we pulled into the drive, it felt a bit isolated and creepy. We were immediately greeted by the owner, Shauna, who is an older, bohemian/hippyish woman (she later told us that she is clairvoyant). Our room was located in the same area where they offer the candlelight dinner (Fortunately, nobody had booked the dinner that night--we would have found it quite awkward to have that take place basically outside our door and also there was no separate key for our room.). The decor had an abandoned church/cult vibe. It gave us the heebeegeebees. Personal belongings of the owners were commingled in the great room area, contributing to said vibe. My husband felt genuinely uncomfortable and scared. We were tempted to leave right after we arrived, but decided to embrace the experience, as we paid a couple hundred dollars, were tired, and had planned to do more hiking the next day. The saving grace was that the room had a private deck area, which was nice (except that the chairs were dirty from the rain, but we wiped them off with napkins we had brought along). There was no soap and no hot water in the bathroom. We purchased soap from the shop down the road in Sperryville and left it in the bathroom for future guests. A freezing cold shower was certainly not what we had hoped for after a long day of hiking, especially when we were paying $235 for the night. There was also no Wifi or air conditioning, even though these amenities were listed on the booking website. As other reviewers have mentioned, there is no cell service in the area, so you are pretty much cut off from civilization. Sadly, Shauna's husband, Frank, recently suffered a stroke, and she is running things on her own (while trying to care for Frank), apparently with the help of an assistant named Walter, who we saw when we first arrived but then not again. Our sense was that she is struggling to keep up with it all. Shauna made breakfast, but it was a slow experience. Each guest was served yogurt, followed by scrambled eggs and one piece of toast with butter. No condiments. She also offered sausage, but there were no takers. I wish there had just been an option to have continental breakfast, especially if you have limited time and need to get going. Again, we got the sense that she is struggling to care for her husband and take over tasks he previously handled, including breakfast. But neither the breakfast, nor the experience overall, matched the glowing descriptions from prior reviews. Unfortunately, the accommodations were not up to par for the price, and we felt pretty creeped out by our experience. We will not be returning.

Do not stay here.We concur with the negative reviews and cannot comprehend the fawning positive ones. We debated staying but decided that the musty odor and tumbledown condition of the Azalea Cottage dictated a hasty retreat. The innkeeper initially made it clear that there would be no refund but relented under pressure of our own, and we made sure we got our money back by calling the online booking site. We feel sorry for the owners but staying there is a bad idea.

W A R N I N G !!!Do not even attempt to stay here! We had tentatively booked a room on line at this place for one night in early October. Our plans changed immediately (within an hour of the booking) and the room was cancelled on line as well -- 5 days in advance of the supposed stay. Our credit card was charged over $200.00 anyway and we are currently in a dispute with the card company over this charge because apparently these owners seem to think that they are entitled to our money in spite of the cancellation. There was never a 'non-refundable' policy shown on line when the reservation was made and it would appear that they are running a scam to obtain deposit money when they should not be getting any. They seem to think they are entitled to your money just because you ALMOST stayed there. DO NOT BOOK ANYTHING WITH THESE INNKEEPERS. We stay at B&Bs all over the country and have never experienced such a thing with any reputable establishment. EVER! They should be ashamed of themselves.

Reminded us of the Bates Motel! STAY AWAY......you have been warned.Don't believe the photos or any positive reviews. We arrived at 5pm and were eventually greeted by a sweet dog. The owner showed up later and tried to give us a bill for $498 for the "Wellness Center" and said we had booked it with her on the phone and that we had arrived earlier than we had agreed upon. The room was not ready. We booked this through B&B and never spoke to the owner so she was mistaken or flat out lying about it. The place is extremely run down and I can see she is overwhelmed trying to keep it up. We decided to check the Azalea Cottage before we committed and were massively under impressed. I booked this for a surprise for my wife's birthday and I totally succeeded, she was definitely surprised. Thankfully we live less than an hour away so we beat a hasty retreat. The owner did not seem surprised we were leaving so perhaps she really is clairvoyant. B&B refunded our gift cards we used to book this. I was very happy with their customer service.
