Would Have Been/Should Have Been 5 stars But ...

This hotel is beautiful and elegant and in a gorgeous location, particularly in the fall with all the leaves changing color. Both the room and the extravagant dinner are worth the high price ($1000/night) ... you can't offer this type of experience for less IMHO. Service, especially in the restaurant, was fantastic. So, what's the problem? Well, after dinner when we went back to our room and noticed that we could clearly hear the music from downstairs (we were one flight up and just above the lobby/restaurant area). We also noticed a box of earplugs had been placed on each side of the bed, so the Inn is aware of the issue. We decided it was no big deal and likely would not be going on late in to the night. At 11 the music was turned off and that seemed reasonable. Unfortunately At exactly 7 AM the next morning the music was turned back on. 7 AM!! If I wanted to get up at 7 I would have stayed home and slept in my own bed for free. Instead of having a wonderful relaxing morning, I was irritable and tired. It was a buzzkill. I really don't understand why it would be necessary to have music playing at 7 am, especially when you are well aware it can be heard clearly in the guestrooms (or perhaps just our room). We ordered room service coffee and when the waiter brought it my husband complained about the music. Within 5 minutes they had turned it off, which, almost made it worse--if the music was optional, why did you turn it on at 7? Bottom line, we're not likely to return because of this issue. But if you like getting up early, everything else was perfect so definitely go!

    Wow from start to finish!!

I cannot say enough good things about our recent dinner and overnight stay at this incredibly beautiful inn. The warm welcome at the door, the sparkling wine in the lounge, followed by an elegant tea: all served as an excellent preview of what was to come. The dinner was delicious: creative, beautifully presented and served. The wine flight which accompanied the meal enhanced the wonderful flavors of the food. Our room was elegant and comfortable: I enjoyed reading while sitting in the window seat. The breakfast the next morning was terrific: juice, fruit, homemade granola, yogurt, croissants, muffins and toast. This was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

    MAGICAL DECADENT BLISS

First-blessed in this strange and awful year, for so many, to even have the occasion to visit this GEM. Our purpose was to celebrate my nurse daughter's 25th birthday in a special way. And, she has declared it the best birthday of her life to-date. :) Second, the drive-whether coming from DC or Richmond is breathtakingly gorgeous. You will travel on meandering country roads with bucolic views of both rolling farms and the truly dusty indigo Blue Ridge mountains. Stunning. Third, we were thrilled to be upgraded to the Jacques Pepin suite (located over the kitchen) with a balcony, fireplace, and the most unique and pretty octagon shaped bathroom. We could have moved in and never left it was that spacious and divinely comfortable. There was also a lovely sweet gift waiting for my daughter. So appreciated! Tea seated next to a festive Christmas tree overlooking a pond brimming with koi beauties (a favorite of my daughter's) was a treat. Dinner was sublime perfection. Our servers were friendly and outstanding in their timing. Nothing felt neither rushed nor delayed. The sommelier was fabulous and found our annoyingly picky Chardonnay palates an amazing and reasonably priced bottle off-menu which we thoroughly enjoyed. Every item on the menu was delicious and a feast for the eyes - our favorites, though, were the amuse bouche pimento cheese pleasures on stones, the tuna and foie gras confit so creatively presented; and the serendipitous finale for the birthday girl - pear perfection (how did you know that is her all time favorite?) Cameron the (corny, adorable and hilarious) Cheese Whiz and his sidekick, Farrah the cow deserve their own section. As a cheese lover this was the highlight of the meal for me. So many spectacular choices! Can we come back and just enjoy this part again? :) Returning to our lovely room we were welcomed with a most delicious port night cap with tiny cookies shaped like dog bones. We slept like veritable babes. Breakfast - our stomachs having stretched from the culinary adventure the night before, we opted not only for the included continental breakfast (best croissants ever) but also the a la carte menu - the salmon bagel so wonderfully presented and the heavenly french toast (oh and with the side of bacon and sausage!) It was then time to brave the rainy and cold elements and walk off some of those very "worth it" calories. We loved perusing the gift shops across the street and then headed for the loop around the farm, visiting the chickens, the llamas and the sheep. Such fun! THANK YOU to everyone at the Inn who made our visit so very perfect and special and one, as a mother and daughter, we will never forget.
