Amazingly beautiful propertyMy wife and I had the pleasure of staying at the Inn at Kulaniapia Falls for one night and we wish we could have stayed longer. The property is very special and the staff are all wonderful. We had a terrific stay and look forward to coming back.

Beautiful diamond in very rough conditionDiamond in very rough condition: Site: 5+ Stars: Hospitality 2 Stars: The new owner has so much to learn about hospitality. Although there were only a few guests, no one checked to see if we were comfortable between 2PM check in until 6:30PM when we came down to dinner. The owner did greet us at that time explaining that he had just returned from Seattle. He told us a good deal about himself, but never asked about us & was called away before telling us about the property and never returned. When we left the next morning none of the staff had appeared say good bye or asked about our stay. In fact, my husband came down at 7:30 and turned on the lights. He looked for a clean coffee cup and had to wash one out. If the staff had asked about our stay, we would have told them. Amenities: 1 Star: Lacking. This property advertises breakfast and wine with dinner. We were told that because of COVID they couldn't serve breakfast. REALLY.... they charged us $100++/person for a 4 course dinner the night before. Instead there was a bowl of fruit with a particularly rotten orange, one package chocolate muffin from the day before and power bars + pkgs of dry oatmeal. Property condition: 3 Star: Lots of deferred maintenance they that could be completed. They advertise a paddle board that we found with a peeling finish. The kayak also looked in need of repair. Our room was clean enough but the bathroom could use improvements. For the price of the room we would have expected a better shower.

Gorgeous setting for getawayThis was one night of our stay of four nights on Kona. In comparison it was pricey for available amenities, but the setting was very serene and private. The rooms were clean and comfortable - no private entrance as the room we had was part of a family home that had been converted to guest rooms. Our room had private lock, private bathroom with shower, walkout balcony, and view of the waterfall. No TVs in the room but that may have a deliberate attempt to capture the ambience of getting away. The Inn is about 15-20 minutes from downtown Hilo and doesnt have a restaurant on site so youll need to plan to drive to town for meals. A text we got before arrival offered an option to join a private chef for communal dinner but that service was only available M - F and we were there on the weekend. A continental breakfast was available onsite. The grounds had a gorgeous waterfall and some hiking trails available for guests. We didnt swim in the small lagoon at the base of the waterfall but it is available for guests. I didnt see a pool on the grounds so Im assuming the lagoon is what was listed as pool under amenities when we booked. The staff was very friendly and was happy to talk about the property and some of the farming the owners are doing on the land. The only other negative aside from the price was that we couldnt get hot water for the shower. It seemed like a known problem (a sign in the bathroom suggested running the hot water in the faucet if the shower wouldnt heat up) but their suggested solution didnt fix the problem. After waiting more than 5 minutes we finally just took cold showers, which never did warm up. If youre looking for a secluded get away and friendly people, this certainly fits the bill and youll enjoy the setting. If you are more interested in amenities and more convenient access to Hilo activities, restaurants, and nightlife, there are other options in Hilo that are in this price range that would probably be a better fit.
