Disappointing Afternoon TeaDecided to give myself and my husband an early Christmas treat by booking an afternoon tea. We were really looking forward to it having been there before and having seen images on social media . We were thinking it would either still be the Beatrix Potter themed afternoon tea or a nice Christmassy themed one bearing in mind how close to Christmas we are. We were however left quite disappointed as there was nothing special about it at all. Service was great dont get me wrong but I have to say the food was nothing special at all especially at £25 per person, sandwiches were very average and there was just nothing special at all in fact it all seemed a little dated especially when you see what they did offer on the Peter Rabbit afternoon tea just a few months ago. We have had much better afternoon teas elsewhere at a fraction of the price. Such a shame as the setting is lovely but I am afraid it all could have been a lot better and I am not sure we will visit again for afternoon tea

Quick breakA one night birthday break at this unique hotel which is part of Ickworth House and set in the grounds of the National Trust Estate. The hotels impressive frontage is the East wing of Ickworth and retains the classic appeal throughout. Dont expect modern, expect traditional features and you wont be disappointed. Our standard double room was adequate for one night stay, the bathroom was rather compact but reasonable standard. The lounge areas are very pleasant and although no formal bar area the service is prompt. We ate in the conservatory rather than the adults only Fredericks restaurant and enjoyed the three course meal, particularly the fish course. In these difficult times compliments to the staff as our service was good and attentive at all times. Breakfast was to order with a good selection to choose from. My full English was very acceptable without being amazing. Just remember this is a family hotel so you do have small children running around from time to time, which may annoy some folk. The hotel boasts a cinema and and a spa which we didnt use on this occasion. We mostly enjoyed the whole experience of the location and completed two of the local walks during our stay. We noticed that the nearby standalone lodge is part of the hotel. Should we ever return it appears to be worth serious consideration.

Frustrating hotel as it could be so wonderful.Have stayed here many times with my family, usually opting for one of the larger apartments. The decor of the rooms is a bit faded and tired and the bathrooms are not very luxurious but there is a certain charm to the place that makes you overlook that. What was most disappointing this time was the standard of the cleaning. We stayed in Butler's and the cleaning was absolutely awful. There was lots crumbs and rubbish underneath the sofa cushions and under the chairs, the bathroom bins had not been emptied and were full to brim with sanitary wear clearly visible, in the kitchen the wine glasses had lipstick marks on them, and the tvs had greasy hand prints all over them. This would be appalling in normal times, but in the midst of the pandemic it was really shocking that this was the standard of cleaning being carried out. I was incredibly disappointed and reported the matter to reception straightaway and the receptionist arranged further cleaning which meant my young family and I having the vacate the room and kick our heels while we waited for this happen. Really inconvenient and nothing more than an apology offered. What was worse was that the following morning after housekeeping had been, we discovered a whole pile of odd socks, toys, books and bits and pieces on the table. These had clearly been left by the previous guests and the housekeeping staff had uncovered them during a more thorough clean of the apartment and assumed they belonged to us. This made me feel very queasy because it meant the room still hadn't been properly cleaned the previous day after our 'extra' cleaning service. It was so disappointing and really put a dampener on my enthusiasm for the place. Other negatives this time were the fact that the hotel now charges for bike hire. This was never the case in previous years and part of the fun of staying was wandering to the shed to pick up a bike on a whim. Everything now has to be booked in advance and it makes the whole thing so much more stressful, not to mention the fact that it is galling to have to now pay to borrow the bikes. This was particularly annoying given the fact that this year, of all years, usual facilities such as the creche and the children's high tea were not operating but we were paying the same rate. So to then also charge extra for the bikes seemed really unfair. I hope they make the bikes complimentary to guests again as, apart from the extra costs, all the extra booking in just made our holiday a hassle rather than the stress-free experience it usually is. The craft sessions laid on by the Den staff were really poor and badly advertised. We spent ages searching the hotel for the locations which kept changing each day and staff members never seemed to know where it was happening. It was hugely frustrating. The other thing which I can promise, after many visits here, is that whatever items are included in your package e.g. welcome drink on arrival or spa treatment or whatever it is... you will never be offered it. You always have to ask for everything in your package and often times you will be given a bill with lots of incorrect charges or your free spa session charged for etc. Check out is always a chaotic experience and our bill has never been correct! It always takes ages to go through the bill and fix it - again, something we have become accustomed to, but really wish wasn't the case. Finally - the grounds of the hotel are completely amazing and I would recommend a visit to the estate itself without question. I would love to return to the hotel again but the standard of cleaning was really problematic and the increased hassle with the booking in for bikes etc. and all the incorrect bill charges put me off. This hotel could be so amazing. They have all the ingredients to be fantastic but it's just not pulled together the way it should be.

Outstanding Conference FacilitiesWe held a strategy and team building day at the Ickworth last week, which thanks to the amazing venue, service and food, was a great success. The environment they created was totally Covid secure and also very Christmassy! Our working day was held in the 'Old Kitchen' downstairs - a large room, which had everything we needed (flip chart stands, projector). The room was very comfortable and private. We had lunch upstairs in the Boardroom (socially distanced). The Christmas turkey dinner was superb (good portions and hot), as was the vegetarian option. The sticky toffee pudding was delicious!! The team felt very special on their day out of the office - we all throughly enjoyed it and did some great work to take the company forward. Thank you very much Viv and your team!
