Disappointing StayUnfortunately the hotel really did not live up to expectations or even the photos on the website. There was significant damp and mould around the windows and doors in the corridors and a musty smell to go with it. We had a family room facing the back of the hotel which meant you could clearly hear the train announcements at the station nearby and got a dismal view of the parking garage. The food was ok and the staff were really friendly but that hardly made up for the shabby surroundings and décor that are in desperate need of a refurbishment.

Did not feel like Valued Guests on our long awaited holiday and CelebrationsThis was our 3rd visit to the Grand Hotel in a year. Our previous visits, a 4 night stay in November when we revisited the hotel after many years and although we thought the hotel needed some refurbishing and decorating we had a lovely stay and because of this we booked a 3 night stay over the New Year celebrations which we thoroughly enjoyed. Over the last 18 months we have had to cancel 4 holidays due to my ill health and loss of mobility and the Grand Hotel is very wheelchair friendly. We decided that when it was possible we would have a weeks holiday at the Grand and we were really looking forward to it. Then Covid 19 stopped this and we were in lockdown for 6 months as I'm very vulnerable and we were unable to celebrate our birthdays, our 1st wedding anniversary and being able to eat again after treatment We were at last allowed to book a week for the very end of September/early October. We arrived later than planned at the hotel but check in was done quickly with Covid restriction and Obel was extremely helpful to my husband. We had requested a room we had before as it really suited my mobility issues with a wheelchair and mobility scooter. The room had a wonderful view and very comfortable bed, but was in need of decorating . In our room was a welcome letter from the General manager with the policies and procedures etc due to Covid 19, our room was now our Sanctuary and would not be serviced during our stay, but you could request fresh towels, top up of amenities and you could request the room be serviced the next day. We had no glasses in our room, but when we reported this to reception this was rectified. We had a room service once during our week's stay but the very dirty waste bin from previous guests was not cleaned and a very thin and too small bin liner was put in it. The room was looking in more need of decorating and deep cleaning than our last stay. The bed throws and cushions that matched the dark curtains and should be took out of the room while the restrictions are on as not necessary. Our windows had cobwebs on the outside, the room next door balcony was in a bad state of repair and weeds growing out of the guttering. The hallway needed redecorating and the lifts needed cleaning as dusty and a liquid was on the control panel for most of our stay. The restaurant this time didn't feel like fine dining. The dinner menu had really been cut down and got very boring if you were staying for a week. A lot of the dishes that we liked were not available especially fish dishes and no cheese alternative. The food was good but not up to the standard of our previous visits but more expensive. On the Saturday night the Chefs Special Sausage and mash was £18.00 , but the following week you could get a 3 course special for 14.95 with live music and a glass of bubbly if celebrating. We were celebrating too, our first meals out for over 6 months and we never got any complementary drinks at dinner even when our table that was booked for the duration of our stay had other people on it and we had to go and wait in the bar one night .There was no table linen or finesse on the way food was served as everything was left on a tray at the end of the table, it reminded me of my recent lengthy stay in hospital but at least you could get cheese with the NHS. The restaurant staff were very pleasant, welcoming and gave excellent service especially Felix, Lumie and Karen. We had breakfast in our room, it always came on time and was good, but we did have a very tatty tray that should have been thrown out. We love the Compass bar and lounge lovely views, a great place to meet family and friends. Tracey, Kenya and Annya are very friendly and give excellent service. They had sold out of some drinks and had no Cognac on our last night! no excuse for this when there are supermarkets near by. Reception area has recently been refurbished and the reception staff very helpful especially Obel, Tom, Chrisa and Limia. There was a great lack of management on this stay, when we stayed before the management were always around and would deal with any problems, questions or just have a friendly chat. We wanted to give our feedback when staying at the hotel but never saw anyone from management. On our return home we filled in the feedback form emailed to us, and we asked for a manager to contact us, after weeks we chased it up 3 times by email then by phone. The General manager did phone back and explained that all cut backs on the menus, shortage of drinks in bar, refurbishment delays, cleaning issues , old website information and was due to Covid 19. We do understand this and appreciate it is very difficult times for the hospitality industry but don't use it as an excuse for all of the issues we have raised. The hotel is owned by an accountant and not a hotelier and although we have mentioned some wonderful staff this is not a 4 star hotel by a long way and is very expensive and we felt disappointed and not Valued Guests .
