Excellent food but poor quality accommodationWe stayed here for three nights in early October. On arriving in our room we discovered that it was unheated and that there was no hot water. We hadn't been advised of this when we checked in but had to report it. We were told that the system had broken down and that the hotel was waiting for an external supplier to fix it. We were pretty cold and wet on arrival so this didn't bode well for our stay. However, the deputy manager quickly brought up a radiator so we at least had a warm room for the night. In the morning we boiled a kettle and washed in the bathroom basin. Thankfully, by the second night the heating problem had been resolved. No compensation or genuine apologies were offered for this inconvenience. The room was very small and there wasnt enough room for example, to open the wardrobe fully. The décor was shabby and run-down, and despite the antiquity of the property, no original features were evident, e.g. mullioned windows, and we could have been staying anywhere. We took extra pillows from the wardrobe on the first night. When I woke in the morning I discovered I had been sleeping on what looked like a blood stain on mine. This was alarming considering the pillow case might not have been changed since the last occupant and that we were in the middle of the Covid 19 pandemic! We reported this to the cleaning lady the next day. She was most apologetic and kind, and sorted the problem. The beds were comfortable. Our room was directly above the restaurants outside seating area and on the third night I was kept awake by the noise of a party of people below until they departed at about 11.30 pm. The service varied from being very good to a bit indifferent, but we were generally pleased with whomever we had contact. We ate in the restaurant each night and the food was excellent - tasty, good sized portions and good quality, as well as well presented. I had roast beef, lamb shanks and fish and chips whilst there. The fish and chips were the best I have had for a long time, and I loved the affogato. Well done Chef! Would return for the food but definitely not the accommodation.

George should be ashamed of himself...I visit Glastonbury often & whilst being a (near enough) local, I am fully aware it is a place that is rich in tourism & as such, businesses take advantage of this sector in order to ensure they thrive amongst strong competition. This is acceptable. What is unacceptable are places such as the George & Pilgrim that seem to perceive tourists as being an inconvenience, yet feel as though their response to this perception can go unchallenged, as tourists will always visit Glastonbury & as such, who cares how customers are treated, as when one leaves, another will reappear. My wife & I nipped into the George & Pilgrim for a light lunch & a beverage. At the time of writing, we are operating in COVID-19 related controlled environments, although the George & Pilgrim must believe they are better than this, as apart from a sign at the front door relaying expectations, nobody is asked to sign in as part of the Track & Trace initiative, nobody is reminded to wear a mask in certain mask wearing areas of the property (although why should they, as the staff are bumbling along without any protective coverings) & the tables are so close together, you can ask a neighbouring customer to pass the salt as if you were at the family dining table. But I am not here to moan about COVID-19 related requirements. There are more generic issues to alert any pending customers of. Service at the bar was slow. They were understandably understaffed, although it wasnt as though those waiting at the bar were in mass numbers. In fact, there was only one other person at the bar who was obviously waiting for the yeast to ferment before being served his beer. Eventually I was served. One drink was incorrect (lemonade & not soda in the wine). I decided to take a positive in the fact my drink was correct & it was only my wife that had to deal with the error. Plus, there was not enough time in the day to wait for the issue to be corrected. On a slightly positive note, food was served relatively quickly. I say served, although I actually mean, thrown on the table without even an enjoy your meal coming from the obviously inconvenienced Waiter. OK, not everybody likes pleasantries, although people do expect cutlery & condiments. Nothing! I then went to find the Waiter to ask where I could find a knife & fork, along with vinegar & mayonnaise. The response was abrupt as the Waiter asked where I was sitting before claiming he would be there in 15mins. I explained the food was already on the table to which he said, OK, 5mins, whilst rolling his eyes. The Waiter walked past our table several times. The dubious person in me would even say he was purposely trying to avoid eye contact, especially when he disappeared less than 10 feet away from me to have a cigarette. After 10mins, we concluded cutlery & condiments were not arriving so borrowed the latter from a nearby table (after all, they were within coughing distance) & ate using our fingers. The Waiter cleared observed this on several occasions although not once apologised for his oversight & probably thought, Ruddy tourists. They are all animals!, as we shovelled fish and chips in our mouths with our hands. Whilst we were eating like Neanderthals, two old ladies in front of us were being served tea & cake. Just as the paranoid part of me was about to assume we had been victimised, one of the old ladies mentioned they had ordered a meal that was set to come before the cake. The Waiter retorted with, I know. Im getting it!, before storming off. 15mins later, the old lady stopped a passing Waitress & asked where their meal was. The Waitress very politely offered to bring it out of urgency. Such urgency resulted in the Waitress walking past the old ladies on several occasions over a 20min period before the Waiter reappeared with their meals. Whilst the Waiter did not offer an apology, he did provide cutlery. Best of luck to the old ladies if they required salt & pepper with their meals. As we left, we heard the barman call out to the Waiter asking if they were still serving tea & cake? The Waiter said he didnt know. The barman asked if he could find out. The Waiter then said, I suppose we are, whilst lifting his hands in despair as if questioning why special privileges should be given to silly tourists who have the cheek to keep him in a job. I understand the Waiter has been mentioned on many occasions throughout this review, although he is just the pinnacle of the shoddy service the George & Pilgrim had to offer. I would have liked to say the food was average & overpriced; which it was, although the behaviour & attitude of the staff distracted you from this fact until it dawned on you several hours later. Maybe that is their business model? Give the flow of ever-visiting tourists an appalling service to remember & they may pay through the nose for average food without even noticing. Good plan; Awful place.

The George and PilgrimDue to restrictions the birthday treat had to be postponed over a month, but worth the wait. Staying in the Henry Vlll room, the atmosphere was amazing. The food both at dinner, a small snack, the chicken and mushroom stew was tasty and very filling!! And the breakfast that was both tasty and lovely to look at was worth every penny. The staff are so friendly and accommodating. Would stay again and again.
