Whatever you do, don't skip breakfastThe Elms at 801 Washington Street in Natchez, Mississippi, could be the finest bed-and-breakfast you've never heard about. Even though it was built in 1804 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976, it didn't begin to come into prominence until 2006, when Esther Carpenter assumed ownership. Much of the furniture in the house dates to 1878, when Carpenter's great-great-great grandparents purchased the property. The fifth generation descendant to own The Elms, she returned to Natchez in 2006 to renovate and restore the mansion to its former charm and elegance. A well-known artist, recognized by Architectural Digest, her artwork can be viewed in the hand stenciled wallpaper that adorns the master suite. Also a professional chef, she was voted one of the 20 best women chefs in the country by USA Today. So don't pass up breakfast at The Elms. Among the fascinating family treasures on display are a family diary, love letters and an arrangement of red wax flowers and greenery framed in a shadow box that was displayed at the Centennial International Exposition of 1876 in Philadelphia. It hangs in the parlor at The Elms. Book a room on the second floor, relax on the porch, view the immaculately landscaped grounds and dream about what Esther Carpenter is cooking for breakfast.

I defy you not to say WOWWe regrettably only had one night in this simply delightful and quirky B&B. Utterly fabulous. Esther (proprietor) could not have been more welcoming. Fantastic, comfortable bed and a great shower. Coffee, tea and refreshments readily available. Absolutely delicious breakfast with beautiful homemade biscuits and blueberry muffins. We cannot recommend The Elms highly enough... we hope you love it as much as we did.

Southern hospitality at its Best! The Elms and its proprietor, Esther Carpenter, provided us with a weekend that was outstanding in every detail. Our bedroom suite was furnished with spotlessly clean antiques, including a beautifully dressed four-poster bed and a clawfoot tub. We spent early mornings and late evenings enjoying the garden views from the second-story front porch, accompanied by coffee in warmed mugs, or the fresh ice bucket Esther always had ready for us. Breakfasts were equally fabulous: ultra-light homemade biscuits, fresh fruit, brioche french toast, bacon, sausage, blueberry muffins; all served on fine china and crisply ironed white linens. Esther even offered us champagne to celebrate our trip. Highly recommend this wonderful gem.

One Of A Kind HospitalityThere is too much, it's impossoble to say it all, but the Elms and Esther are easily the best place we have ever stayed. It's not like going to a BnB, those are everywhere. It's like coming home to an opulent place where some warm and wonderful family member (who happens to be a 5-star Chef) takes such great care of you. Whether breakfast includes muffins or pancakes or those AMAZING biscuits, it is always irresistible. Fruit, eggs, bacon and sausage, and sometimes Grits too! The town of Natchez is quaint and safe, which is nice when you come from Memphis. My 2 teenage girls loved going into town, wandering through shops and festivities. I indulged in time at the beautiful home, and I have found Esther and Mark to be the most welcoming and kind people. Mark even showed us some "off the map" places and shared stories you don't hear in the tours. There isn't anything like a stay at the Elms. If Natchez is a stop on your trip, don't miss the opportunity to stay here. And for goodness sake, don't miss BREAKFAST!

Simply the BestWe came to Natchez for a couple of days right before Thanksgiving and wanted to try a B and B which we hadnt done in quite a while. The breakfasts were absolutely delicious. You couldnt ask for a better hostess than Esther. Not only did she cook an excellent breakfast but was so accommodating and helpful. She gave us advice on where to eat lunch and dinner, as well as what plantation homes to visit. We will definitely go to Natchez again and will stay at the Elms. If you are heading to Natchez definitely stay at the Elms.
