Lovely old buildingPictou is a very charming, but quite small town today. Its remarkable to think how much trade they must have been doing back in the 19th century to require such a grand customs building, with neighboring train station. Fortunately, travelers today can still enjoy the architecture by staying at the inn. We had room 1C, with views out to the water, 14 foot ceilings, huge arched windows, and a remarkable old fireplace. The room was very large and airy, with quite a big bathroom as well. Breakfast is more than sufficient to start your day, with toast, cereal, and yogurt, although there is no hot food. The Inn is located on the water, within a few blocks of all the sights and restaurants in town. One caveat if you have mobility issues: you can request a room on the ground floor to avoid the long flight of stairs to the second floor. However, the breakfast area is in the basement.

A great surprise! We stayed 1 night and were not sure we were at the right spot when we pulled up. This Historic Building was once an actual Customs office. It is right across from the water and next to an old train station. The Inn Keeper Doug was very friendly and directed us down the street to eat. Our room had 16' high ceilings and everything we needed. The comp breakfast was in the basement, brick walls and had high ceilings as well. I guess it used to be a bar at one time. It was super!

Interesting Place, Processing Plant Runs a Bit LateCustoms House Inn, a restored post office, is indeed a very charming place. The place seems recently renovated and the room I stayed in (2A) was quaint with a king-sized bed and hardwood floors. The TV is a bit small considering the distance to the bed or the couch however this is not a place that you would spend a lot of time in the room watching TV. However there is some kind of processing plant across the room I was in on the water and it ran at least until 11:00 pm, or so it seemed. And it was a bit loud considering how quiet it was when it finally shut down. A continental breakfast is included in the basement. The Innkeeper is a nice guy and is generally available by calling his cell phone. There are not a lot of other activities on the property (no pool or fitness room - or at least I didn't see one). I imagine that in the summertime, this would be a very busy place. I would still try to get a room on the second floor but away from the water (which is unfortunate because that is the better view).

Great stay!Huge room, huge windows, very high ceiling, glossy old wooden floor certainly unusual and reflected its original use as an office in an actual Customs House. Comfortable bed and nice bathroom, with a huge tub. Breakfast was minimal (self-serve cereal and toast, coffee and tea) but served in a very cool former pub in the ground level. Doug was very friendly and we had a nice chat. A nice stopover on our trip!

It's as most have described -- terrific!I'll echo all the positive reviews, though I did read the negative, (don't let them put you off.) Our Custom's House Inn room was clean (not a speck of dust or grit on the lovely hardwood floors), warm for the cool time of year, roomy, including its spacious, clean bathroom with large modern tub/shower. We arrived late in the evening and late in the tourist season to a note/key on the reception desk door -- terrific; a no-hassle check-in! A very quiet overnight stay (we may have been the only guests?), and breakfast as was described by the owner - basic. No surprises, a good value, comfortable sleep. We'd stay longer and stay again if the chance came.
