Fabulous foodVisited The Cross on a Wednesday evening with friends. Its in a really nice location tucked away in Kingussie and there was a welcoming fire as it was quite a cold evening. We had the set menu at £65 pp which was absolutely superb. Three courses plus amuse-bouche and lovely freshly baked flavoured rolls - delicious. Compliments to the chef. Good selection of wines too. The only downside was the ambience which was a bit staid. However would we return - absolutely !

Wow!Only stayed here one night but it was such a special place. Owners very welcoming and felt very Covid secure throughout. Our bedroom had sloping roof but not an issue despite hubby being 6` 3". Separate lounge area and good sized bathroom. Within the sloping roof there was a Velux window with blind directly above the bed. We decided to leave the blind open and it was magical to lie in a cosy bed watching the stars! We had the longer tasting menu. Compared to other restaurants offering tasting menus around the country we felt this was excellent quality and value. Due to Covid restrictions alcohol was not allowed in Scotland during our stay . However if anything just having sparkling water with the meal meant the tastes were even better.(Other soft drinks available - we just chose sparkling water to accompany our meal). Breakfast was also superb - t is lovely to have freshly squeezed orange juice and excellent bread for toast. Croissants and homemade muesli deserve a special mention too! We will definitely return!

Want To Hear About Our Secret Find?Intrigued by the Title of this review? Good, read on. My wife and I had booked several stays in Scotland and were looking for a nice place to stay for a couple of nights on the fringes of the Cairngorms. My search fortunately found 'The Cross at Kingussie', and boy oh boy am I glad it did. First off, the communication from Derek & Celia Kitchingman was both quick and welcoming and left me in no doubt that the previous reviews I had read were accurate, it also left me in no doubt that we definitely wanted to visit. Tucked away just off the beaten track, The Cross is a haven to the weary driver, with the warmest of welcomes and a cup of tea and shortbread to settle in. The room was not just wonderfully clean, but homely and very, very comfortable; and with an extremely picturesque view over the cascading water ( which is ever-present but not disturbing in any way). Our evening meal was, simply put, superb and very impressive, particularly given the Covid environment we are all living in. I have done the Michelin Starred Restaurant experience on several occasions and know what excellence is; therefore I hope my comments are qualified. Each course was brilliantly thought through and faultless. My quail & foie gras starter on my second evening is without doubt the best Starter I have ever had. My Cheese Board was excellent but unfortunately crying out to be accompanied by a glass of wine or Port, but argh! Those damn Covid restrictions. Breakfast was also sublime, with a delightfully fragrant homemade marmalade. The best way to start your day. Speaking of which the walks around 'The Cross' are stunning and we were wonderfully set up for our 3 hour or so walk/hike up Creag Bheag and back; stunningly beautiful and invigorating. I hope my photos are uplifted!! We will go back for sure next time we visit that Region of Scotland. I cannot recommend this perfect place more highly. The Kitchen brigade are to be congratulated on their outstanding dishes; Thank you. And thank you to Derek Celia and their whole team for a memorable stay. We wish them the very best during the dark and challenging times ahead in combatting and coping with Covid, and we live in hope that we can return to have a glass of wine to compliment the gorgeous food and surroundings.
