Very cool building, inside and out

After years of driving past, I finally got to spend a night here. The décor inside has a lot of small details that really complete the feeling of an old English inn. There is a small pool that was totally packed and there isn't too much within walking distance, but the room was clean and there was a smooth check in/check out procedure.

St. Louis Landmark beginning to show her age

The Cheshire Inn is a St. Louis Landmark. I lived in St. Louis for a number of years, therefore I never stayed here as a guest, although friends would often gather at their old English Pub, the Fox and Hounds. My family was in St. Louis for medical reasons and we all stayed in the Cheshire. They gave us great rates and an additional plus - they are dog friendly. They have a large sitting room which has a huge fireplace which they keep going all day and evening. There all large game tables and family and friends find this to be a super great place to relax, have drinks, play games, etc. The somewhat down side is because of the COVID their occupancy rate is down considerably. Because of this, they are running on a skeleton staff and unfortunately the cleanliness is suffering. There is no maid service during your stay. If you need additional towels, etc. Contact the desk. My room was clean except the bathroom sink and there was an area behind the faucet which had a build up of dirt which indicated to me, it had not been looked at in several months. The rug between the two couches in their large living room had crumbs on it and they remained there for several days Area around fireplace had not been cleaned. There was ash debris remains from logs etc., on the floor in front of the fireplace. These were clearly visible, and yet no one took the time to vacuum this area. The staff is very friendly and accommodating in spite of about a 20% occupancy. COVID is not their fault, but they really need to pay attention to the cleaning It is suffering and it shows.

Charming decor especially for The Crown fans.

My husband and I visited on a Saturday night as a delayed valentines date. The staff was wonderful and very accommodating. The decor had lots of historical significance and intricate wood work. There was a real wood burning fire place in lobby that was very welcoming. We played chess and enjoyed drinks from the Fox and Hound Tavern. The crowd was mature (30s up) and the conversation in the Tavern was very interesting. Our room was clean and the common areas were clean. We did keep knocking our knees on the bed frame which I know is mentioned in another review. We were in room 233 and we should have asked for bumpers. Overall, we had a great stay and hope to return. Ehhh

I wanted to love this hotel, I really did. I booked this over your classic Hampton or Hyatt due to the uniqueness and I was just very disappointed. To start, we checked in easily then went up to our room only to discover we did not have the correct room type. I called the front desk and they said that since I booked through a third party, I was not guaranteed the room I reserved and since they were booked, we had no other choice. Annoying but whatever. Second, our room was FREEZING. It was an EXTREMELY cold weekend in St. Louis, like 7 degrees, and our heat was completely off. I cranked our heat up to like 90 then we went to dinner. When we got back, it was still freezing! When I called reception they said they have to flip a switch to turn the heat on, why this wasnt done prior to us checking in is beyond me. So they flipped whatever switch, and still in an hour, freezing. I called reception again and they said we could move rooms or theyd bring a space heater. It was close to 11 pm by that point and we did not want to pack up so they did bring a space heater. The following morning, room was still cold so called reception to get a new room. They said theyd see what they could do, and then nothing. All in all I was very disappointed with our room and how things were handled but the hotel itself was very charming with fireplaces in the main lobby and a great gym.

    So much promise ...

We tried to give the Cheshire the benefit of the doubt. We had a very affordable rate on a Saturday evening. Check in was fine and we were told they had two restaurants for guests at our arrival. We went down to the restaurant in the hotel at 4pm to get an appetizer before dinner. They had menus on the tables. As we ordered we were told the kitchen did not open until 5pm. This was disappointing as there was no signs stating it was not in full operation. Our room was clean but we only had two bath towels and two hand towels in the bathroom- no wash clothes or bath mat (the floor was cold tile). We did ask for extra towels when we arrived in for the evening and were told that they didnt have any. The front desk attendant said we could call back after 11:30pm to see if some were available. Around 11:30pm the fire alarm went off and continued to go off for the next hour. We contacted the front desk and they said there was no fire and as soon as the fire department arrived the alarm would go off. It took about 45 minutes for this to happen. Our room was extra warm and we turned the air down and it never changed all evening. It was still very warm the next morning. The mattress on the bed needs to be replaced. It was a king bed and was much lower in the middle. The pillows on the bed were not full size they had four couch sized pillows- square pillows instead . There were no other pillows or even a blanket in the room. I was glad we did not run out of toilet paper. We arrived to less than half a roll and left with it almost gone. There was no extra paper available. The room was noisy if anyone walked outside the door. Luckily the hotel was not fully occupied. The entire hotel was well decorated but the floors were very dirty. A little cleaning and shine would make a huge difference. Our room had one lamp that was not functioning and one of the wall decorations was blank and seemed to have been torn off the wall. (Picture attached) We went to the breakfast offered in the morning and were glad they had coffee, cold cereal, packaged breads, fruit and juice available. It was appreciated that they still offered this during the pandemic. The hotel has lots of charm and could be so beautiful if a little more cleaning in the public spaces would happen. We did appreciate the free parking that was available.
