Charity BallWe attended a charity event here of which we paid a small fortune for the 'meal'. The starter eventually arrived which consisted of a slither of smoked salmon and wilting rocket. After a wait of over an hour the mains arrived for some of us, again rubber chicken, which was cold and inedible, not sure what accompanied it as we just left it all. Others didnt get any food at all. Apparently the ovens had broken! The management did not handle the situation at all, and we have never received an apology or an offer of our money back. I am going to ask directly. The charities have also lost out on a substantial amount of money, due to the mis- management of the Botley Grange. I'm not surprised they are under investigation.

Charity BallI attended the same charity ball in November. We were a group of over 180 people all there to enjoy a fun night and raise funds for two local charities. The tickets were not cheap and covered the cost of the food and drinks package. The service provided on the night when things started to go wrong is certainly not worthy of 4 stars. After much prompting and questioning we found out there was a problem with the ovens - this followed starters taking over an hour to be served and still after a further 2 hours no mains and no apology. The response on the night was to extend the bar opening where we could purchase more drinks and a couple of pizzas were supplied. How can a hotel not have a back up plan for when things go wrong? Disappointment is an understatement. Added to which even after the event the follow up and aftercare has been completely unprofessional and to date no refund has been offered. Definitely a case of not caring and not supporting your local community.

Don't Book! Gone in administrationThis hotel looks great and is well brochured from the outside, but inside its whole different story. All the rooms are in terrible disrepair with broken fittings, stains, no hot water, mould everwhere and the staff are cold, unfriendly, and hardly smile. Food was terrible and under cooked, bar was over priced and the spar/changing rooms and showers was disgusting. I was booked for 3 days, but I went elsewhere after one night - paid the bill, walked out and did some research. The poor food is explained by the fact that the kitchen was recently awarded a food hygene rating of 1 out of 5. Staff employement reviews are alarming! where it receives an extremely high turnover of staff and 'Indeed' rates the hotel as an employer 1.5 out of 5. And finally to top it all, I then discovered through the Gazette that the Hotel and Spar is under administration, however the same owners and management is in control - simply transferred the assetts to a different company name. This Hotel is in its death throes and really needs to be put out of its misery by the public, who's best advice is not to book any room or spend a single penny at this place.

2 night stay in Dec 2019We stayed for 2 nights, a Saturday & Sunday. We didn't eat at the hotel so I can't comment on the food. The lift wasn't working but our room was up one flight of stairs and first on the landing. The decor was quite grand. Our room was large with a walk in wardrobe which also contained an iron & ironing board. Bed was clean & comfortable. Bathroom was spotlessly clean. There was free parking. I did get the impression the place had seen better days but everything in our room worked as it should.

Not Too BadLooking at the reviews, we thought this might be a good place to stay the night before our cruise ship left the port of Southampton so we booked a room. It was a very warm day (for the UK) and we weren't surprised that there was no air-conditioning, but we were given a fan that made things work well enough. Our first room we were given had a window view that looked out over a roof that was littered with beer cans and cigarette butts ~ not too attractive. We were given another room that was better as far as the view was concerned but still looked out over a roof. It was not a view of the grounds at all (back of the hotel). The rooms were big but the furniture was very threadbare and needing to be replaced, as well as the carpeting. The halls had the feel of days of glory with a lot of woodwork, stairwells that had the mysterious creaking sounds and giving your imagination some great food for thought. The staff were all very helpful, and we were able to get a light snack from the bar even though the dining room was closed for the day. The breakfast the following morning was excellent with lots of choices. It could be a beautiful place with its wealth of history but would need a lot of love, time, and money to restore it to a really wonderful place. The grounds also had a well worn look to them, unfortunately. I think we would try a different spot to stay on our next trip.
