Some Good, Some BadI thought the price here was quite expensive but maybe that's just what you need to pay around here. You are really paying for the location because the restaurant and rooms are literally right on the river. The rooms are fairly adequate but rather rustic. I usually expect a fridge in an air-con room, didn't get one. The one thing that really annoyed me was the lack of Wi-Fi which you can get in the restaurant but can't be picked up from the rooms. The food here is good - the somtam was the best that I ever had. Maybe eat lunch and dinner here but choose somewhere else to actually stay. I wouldn't agree with the comments people have made about the staff though as I thought the service was fine.

Nice foodWe did not stay at the resort but just ate there. The food is good but please be patient with the staff as their command of English is not so good. We are seated at the far end of the restaurant but there is no staff around that area. So when we need something, we need to walk all the way tot he front of the restaurant. So I hope they could at the least station a staff when there are customer at that part of the restaurant. Food is authentic Thai and not tweak for any kind of tourist.

Kok River & SmugglingI have only eaten at this resort, but found the food just fine for my tastes. I do want to share some interesting background information about the Kok River. You are very close to the Burma (Myanmar) border in Thaton. In fact, you can stand almost anywhere in Thaton and look up at the top of a Burma mountain and see a Burmese Army outpost. Burma and Thailand have a very long history of military conflict. You can take a boat trip up the Kok until you see a heavy steel cable that hangs across the river warning that you are about to enter Burma. On both Thai sides of the river are armed Thai soldiers with automatic weapons. It is well established that the Burmese Army top brass manufacture and smuggle yaba or meth into Thailand by using poor mountain tribe "mules". A few years ago Thai anti-drug agents cracked one clever smuggling practice by discovering that packages of yaba were being tied on a short length of rope to hang down in the water from logs floating down the river. Smugglers down the river would retrieve the packages with their boat on down the river. They then boated to Chiang Rai where they relayed the stuff to the next "mule" and then on down to Chiang Mai and points south.

Lunchtime buffet goodSmall party had good menu of the day, the selection was a mixture of traditional Thai and 'International' and extra portions were requested and provided, freshly cooked. Staff had little English but they were able to communicate with us without problem.

Thaton River View Resort sadly not what they show at the websiteWe booked a room at Thaton River View Resort, because the website looks OK and the price including breakfast with 1.400,- THB for the weekend was OK But when we arrived we feel happy because the place looks nice just at the river with a restarant. But after checking the room we run away. at google someone post a price including breakfast for 600,- THB 3 years ago and I think that time the room looks better than now but they charge 1.400,-
