In need of a little TLC, but offers good service and great onsen and room views
The hotel is a bit rundown, but the onsen and views from the rooms are great. Tenninkaku is the oldest onsen in the Tenninkyo area and is right next to the walkway which leads to the scenic waterfall in the gorge, best seen in the autumn with the accompanying red and yellow hues. The staff were helpful and attentive, and we, a group of three women, had a very relaxing stay. During our stay we had a buffet dinner which was mediocre - not terrible, but not brilliant either. Our Japanese-style room was clean and offered good views of the river. The highlight of the stay, for women in particular, is the onsen. Usually reserved for men, the beautiful rotemburo with views of the forest, mountain and river is available for women only between 2am and 9am in the morning, which means that women can only experience it if they are overnighting at the hotel. We surmised that an old ramshackle building above the rotemburo may even have been one of the original bath-houses featured in the interesting black and white photos next to the gift shop. If you are looking for a luxurious onsen experience this hotel is not for you, but for an affordable stay in a beautiful area Tenninkaku is a good choice.

A run down hotel that has seen its heydays long ago
All signs en route pointed to the onsen. What a disappointment when we saw the hotel. It was run down and badly maintained. The journey to the hotel was a long one from Furano and there was no activities around hotel. It is a dead town. The redeeming factor is the beautiful gorge and streams next to the hotel. Even the walkways to the supposedly famed waterfalls were closed due to land slides. For half board, you get a buffet dinner and breakfast. Offering was not too bad except poor food presentation. The outdoor onsen is more inviting than the indoor one which looks dirty and forlorn. Hotel is better accessible via self driving.
