Weird B&B is a "skip" in my book.We stayed in the "Orchard Suite" which sounded like a fantastic deal, sleeping up to 6 with breakfast. Volcano itself is not a place you visit for the town -- but the park, lava, and nearby sites are fantastic! Regarding the Tara Firm Inn -- Little did we know, the suite we selected is above the common area as a "loft", so we were woken up at 5AM by the owners preparing breakfast. There was no shades, so light filled the room, again, making it hard to sleep. The floor creaked, and the whole place smelled musty. The beds were uncomfortable, and the door to the bedroom can't be closed without blocking those in the "loft" out of the bathroom. Breakfast was below average. Some cut fruit, a few odd mini-boxes of cereal, and some bread. To top everything off, there was an additional fee per guest I was not aware of. I admit it, my mistake. But when I called to inquire why I wasn't told about this on arrival (I just noticed it on my credit card statement, and, it was way too high), the owner treated me like I was an idiot for not being able to find the policy on the website. She in turn, went to find it and had difficulty herself (hint: it's not in the "reservation policy" area of the website). The next night, we stayed at a $50 cabin in the park, and found it cleaner, quieter and more private. I cannot recommend a stay at the Tara Firma.

Clean and Comfortable, A peaceful place in the rainforestMy family stayed in the Orchid Suite, a loft where our two kids slept in two roomy beds, a small bedroom where my husband and I slept, and a nice roomy bathroom for the four of us to share. The Inn is clean, the beds are comfortable, and a more peaceful place to stay you will not find. It's a quiet place surrounded by beautiful plants. It's a traditional bed and breakfast, so there is a common area with a small refrigerator, a microwave, tea, coffee, and some dishes and things, along with some seating and a television. Every morning we had fresh fruit and breads ready when we were ready to eat. Fritz, the inn keeper is very friendly and extremely helpful and knowledgeable about the surrounding area, the national park, and local places to eat. We enjoyed our three night stay here very much. An excellent value and a perfect place to "land" after a day of hiking and exploring the park and surrounding area.

Try somewhere elseThere was 7 of us we were told that we had the place to ourselves but the kitchen was hers (the owners), very strange as it is apart of the common area. In the common area is a fridge, microwave and table where we can make tea and coffee yet when we wanted to make coffee the coffee was in her fridge. So not really sure how we were to stay out of her kitchen when some things were still stored in there and items were not refilled. There were random packets of cereal, popcorn, muesli bars and drinks which we assumed we were unable to eat. The house did smell as if it had been locked up for too long and the stairs and floor were very noisy so I would hate to be there with strangers and want a sleep in. Everything was clean enough but the attention to detail was missing and there is so much untapped potential. Both the Fern and Ginger rooms are actually located on the first floor, as there is a flight of stairs to climb from the ground, which is not advised and when you have people with hip and leg problems this can be an issue. Both these rooms only have double beds so if you are over 5 feet forget it, there is very little room to place any personally belongings unless you fully unpack into the cupboards. My husband and I had the worst night sleep and we ended up with one of us out on the lounge. The Ginger is also located directly under the bathroom up stairs and every time the toilet is flushed or water is sent to waste it sounds like it is coming into the room. The second night we had a full day and just wanted to get take away and eat in. This seems to not please the owner as she was very strange when we were all sitting around the table eating when she was in the kitchen. Breakfast was fresh fruit, bread, muffins or croissant and you could help yourself to the random cereal boxes. The location is perfect for visiting the Volcano National Park, but if you can find somewhere else I would.

An inn at a perfect location for visiting Volcano National ParkWe were 3 nights at Tara Firma B&B. Our room was small, but we had use of the living room and dining room table. Kate, the owner, lives in another wing of the house, so we had our privacy most of the time. She supplies a nice breakfast of breads, fresh fruit and cereal. There are granola bars on the breakfast buffet to take for the long trail walks in the park. She even supplied us with flashlights when we went to see the red glow of the volcano at night. .
